The Josef Fritzl case
There doesn't seem to be an existing topic on this but I'm sure we all know this horrific story of the man who imprisoned his daughter in a cellar for 24 years.
I've just come across this story from 2008 - apparently the McCanns were encouraged by the case as it showed that missing people could re-emerge many years later.........

Re: The Josef Fritzl case
They've been clutching at other missing and found children before and after, for all of the wrong reasons IMO
And [may I repeat?] were stupid enough to cite the Zapata case to undermine the reliability of cadaver dogs ...

The article I posted originally here also mentions Natascha Kampusch.

Re: The Josef Fritzl case
I'm just watching the programme now.

How Elisabeth and her children were able to survive in these terrible conditions for so long I don't know. I'm claustrophobic and merely looking at photos of the hellhole where she was kept makes me feel ill.

Re: The Josef Fritzl case
Almost 10 years on from the family's rescue.
I thought I'd read that the house was demolished but not so.

He covered his tracks by telling police Elisabeth had run away to a sect on August 29, 1984 – the day he drugged her and dragged her to his dungeon prison – and only returned to drop the three children as babies on his door step.
Incredibly, police, neighbours, family and friends all accepted his story.
The 'running away to join a sect' idea has some eerie parallels with the Elizabeth Smart case in the US. It was alleged that Elizabeth was stolen from the bed she shared with her sister one night at their parents' home by a member of a sect who then kept her chained in a liar and repeatedly raped her. The story has never really made sense to me, among others.
But how Fritz managed to convince his wife of his own story - whereby their own daughter allegedly had run away but dropped three children as babies on his door step - is anyone's guess? It's almost as absurd a story as the stork delivering babies down the chimney.
It's interesting, though, that Elisabeth at first was convinced that police would not believe her story and would only believe her father. I wonder her father's decision to imprison her was made as he was worried she was about to talk?

Re: The Josef Fritzl case
You might be right about the initial reason for imprisoning Elisabeth as apparently Fritzl was already abusing her by then.
As for her mother, I imagine that she was frightened of him and accepted everything he said - possibly she is of limited intelligence?

Re: The Josef Fritzl case
Oh gosh - a big can of worms I would imagine.
But not necessarily of low intelligence....maybe just 'could not go there'.....difficult to accept that the father of your child/children could behave in certain ways...?

I don't think that anyone could ever have imagined what had happened to Elisabeth and who was responsible!
