Madeleine McCann's mother takes drug test

Kate McCann was made a suspect in her daughter's disappearance in September.

The mother of missing Madeleine McCann has undergone a drugs test to prove she was not on medication at the time of her daughter's disappearance, it has been revealed.

Kate McCann, 39, has rejected claims that she was "mentally unstable" and taking anti-depressants when Madeleine disappeared from the family's rented Algarve holiday apartment on May 3.

This is one of theories being explored by Portuguese police, who have suggested Mrs McCann had problems "coping" with her "hyperactive" children.

Detectives believe Madeleine may have died in the apartment and her body was hidden by her parents, who were made arguidos - or formal suspects - on September 7.

At the time it was claimed that Portuguese detectives had seized journals written by Mrs McCann and commissioned criminal psychologists to analyse her mental state.

It was reported that police had applied to see her medical records to prove she was suffering from clinical depression.
But the results of toxicology tests on a strand of Mrs McCann's hair showed no evidence that she had taken drugs in the past eight months, her legal team announced.

The McCanns' two-year-old twins, Sean and Amelie, have also been tested to prove they were never given sedatives, after claims that Madeleine may have died of an accidental overdose.

Detectives were said to believe that the McCanns, who are both doctors, may have sedated their children to ensure they slept while they went to dinner with friends at a nearby restaurant.

The drug tests, which were conducted in September, form part of a dossier of evidence compiled by the McCanns' legal team to demolish the police case against them.

Edward Smethurst, the lawyer coordinating the McCanns' defence, said: "Hair grows by about a centimetre a month so if you have eight centimetres of hair, you can test for drugs going back eight months.

"With the appropriate, fully-accredited experts, hair samples were taken from Sean, Amelie and Kate and the conclusion was no evidence of sedatives or drugs were found.

"There were various stories circulating that Kate might somehow be unstable and might be depressed and whatever else, but the tests demonstrate that the kind of drugs she might be on did not show up."

Meanwhile, it emerged that the so-called Tapas Nine - the name given to the McCanns and the seven friends who dined with them on the night of Madeleine's disappearance - could wait up to six months before being re-interviewed by police.

The group have said that they are willing to be questioned again if it will help clear up any inconsistencies investigators believe may exist in their original statements.

Portuguese detectives have prepared a list of 100 questions to ask the group and want to travel to Britain to carry out the interviews, but they are being delayed by red tape.

A legal letter has been drawn up to send to British authorities, but approval has not yet been given by the state prosecutor, Jose Magalhaes e Menezes, Portuguese newspaper 24 Horas reported.

He waiting for the results of forensic tests from a Birmingham laboratory to be returned before sending the legal letter on to a judge.
The judge will then send it to attorney general Fernando Pinto Monteiro, who will pass it on to Portugal's justice ministry and the ministry of foreign affairs.

From there the letter will be sent to the UK Foreign Office and onto the Lord Chancellor's office before British police are asked to carry out the interview attended by their Portuguese counterparts.

Joao Pedroso, a lawyer and former member of the Superior Council of Magistrates, said it was a long drawn out process.
"The letters normally take six months," he said.
