Vatican says cremation ashes cannot be scattered or kept at home

I'm feeling in a poll mood!  How about this for nonsence, well it is imo anyway.

Vatican says cremation ashes cannot be scattered

Published

The Vatican has said that Catholics who want to be cremated cannot have their ashes scattered, divvied up or kept at home.

(snipped)

To set the faithful straight, the Vatican said ashes and bone fragments cannot be kept at home, since that would deprive the Christian community as a whole from remembering the dead.
Rather, church authorities should designate a sacred place, such as a cemetery or church area, to hold them.

Only in extraordinary cases can a bishop allow ashes to be kept at home, it said.

Well that's my dad in trouble ( ok maybe not as he isn't Catholic) but he still has my mum's ashes in the wardrobe. She died in 2006. He says that when he goes we have to scatter them both together. I think he can't let go and instead of making a decision he is passing the buck but that is his wish and much though I find it a bit macabre I would never dream if over-riding his wishes.
When the time comes his four daughters will scatter their combined ashes somewhere that was special to them both.
It's a form of comfort to him to know they will be together again one day, and a way of dealing with grief for families. It's not for anyone else to dictate.

I don't think that you need to keep the ashes or other remains of a person in a public place - in my view, the memories (mostly good, I hope!) of that person are carried with friends and family wherever they go.

Thank God that I'm an atheist!

Yes, the old joke but it really confused someone on Facebook who asked how you can thank God if you're an atheist.

I'm not religious in the slightest but just voted option 1.

I think the Vatican will lose a lot of 'customers' with this sort of attitude. They have allowed cremation since 1960, yet come out with this waffle now! How are all those faithful Catholics going to feel who scattered ashes of loved ones in years gone by, are they going to be excommunicated. This I expect will worry a lot of old people who are very religious.

100% support so far for option 1.

My option is: we should do what the dead wanted we'd do with their ashes.

Option 1.

It makes me laugh that the vatican says they should be buried in a `sacred` place.  Sacred to whom?

Anything or anywhere can be `sacred`.  A stone or a tree can be sacred to someone - it just has to be thought as special, have meaning and attention focused on it.

It seems the church has decided what or where is sacred and `you will do as we say`.

Option 1

Personally I prefer burial, but I echo Mimi's Humanist view.

Hi bluebell, I didn`t realise I had a Humanist view Smile

We have a woodland area near here that is a Humanist burial ground and of course it has become sacred. More and more people seem to be choosing this way of resting their dead. It`s very expensive though.

I heard a joke the other night -

"The living are just the dead on holiday" - but I thought No, it`s the opposite as far as I`m concerned. It should be "The living are just the dead in prison".

I think it's up to the people themselves, it's ashes, not bodies.

No need to apologise for anything. I thought it was actually a compliment. flower
