The Zodiac Killer

No thread on the Zodiac killer?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zodiac_Killer

I watched the film, with Jake Gyllenhaal and Mark Gruffalo, last night. Can heartily recommend it.

I thought there was a thread on here about it but obviously not.

Yeah it is a good film from what I remember although it was many years ago when I watched it and actually can't remember a great deal about it thinking about it scratch

In fact I have it on DVD so will dust it down sometime.

A perplexing mystery indeed.

Must look into this, I love a good crime story. Never heard of it before but glanced at that link from unreorganised now.
Unsolved? and they have few clues? and they haven't even managed to decode the messages? This is the country of CSI - the Body Farm - Quantico - but they haven't worked it it out yet, I'm amazed !

Will try and catch the film, as long as it isn't too gory.

Wow @ Bluebell. I can't believe you've never heard of the Zodiac killer.

Or perhaps it's not as well known as I thought. Has others heard of it....

This isn't ringing any bells for me at the moment.

Not too gory, but it is long. I thought it was very good*. Speaking as somebody who wasn't actually there, the evocation of 60s/70s California seemed pretty convincing to me.

They had various strong suspects but much was made of the evidence being circumstantial, with a reticence to proceed on that basis. When the initial hype died down the Police just moved on to the next most pressing thing. There was a hint at an attempt to scupper the investigation but I'm not sure if there are any "conspiracy" angles out there.

*Bearing in mind that the film I had most recently watched before it was Cockneys vs Zombies, which might just be the worst film I have ever seen. I'm still not 100% happy that Richard Briers was even aware that he was in it....

One conspiracy I read about (and the article is below) is that Ted Cruz was the Zodiac Killer.

38% of voters in Florida believed that Ted Cruz might be the Zodiac killer. (In fact, 10% said that yes, they thought he was; 28% were “not sure”.)

Ted Cruz was born in 1970.

The first confirmed Zodiac killing was in 1968.

I don't know what they were putting in the water in 1970's California (well, apart from recycled LSD) but the Zodiac case intertwined with the Patty Hearst "kidnapping".

I was thinking about the Hearst case only recently. Now that is one that I definitely do remember.

Do you find yourself spending much time thinking about dubious kidnappings? Laughing Laughing Laughing

I think that one was actually genuine!

It's only in more recent years that experience has shown that things are often not what they seem to be.......

Lots of the info we have about the Zodiac came from Graysmith's 1986 book, which he claimed to write in conjunction with access to police files. So a lot of the narrative we have is false.

There is very good evidence that the murders were separate events, the ciphers ended up going to specific papers.

Highly recommend Thomas Horan's work:
