BREAKING NEWS: Police open fire outside House of Commons and hit knife-wielding man amid reports of explosion on Westminster Bridge
Armed Police have opened fire and shot a person outside the Houses of Parliament.
Several shots were fired at around 2.35pm.
Three bodies were visible on the floor and the Palace was placed on lock down.
The House of Commons was suspended by Deputy Speaker Lindsay Hoyle. MPs have been ordered to wait inside the Commons chamber.
People outside the palace could be seen running from the scene when the shots were heard.
A man with a knife was seen within the confines of the palace.
An eye witness said that a car was seen to mow down five people on Westminster Bridge.
Police are then believed to have shot a man who tried to enter the Parliamentary Estate.
The dramatic incident comes weeks after it was revealed that UK security services have foiled 13 potential attacks in less than four years, while counter-terrorism units are running more than 500 investigations at any time.
The official threat level for international terrorism has stood at severe, meaning an attack is 'highly likely', for more than two years.
Liberal Democrat transport spokeswoman Baroness Randerson said countries seem to have been 'singled out based on religious beliefs'.
'Of course safety is paramount at all times and we all need to remain vigilant but this ban needs to be explained in detail,' she said.

If I believed in a cover-up and was a proper conspiracy theorist like Rich Hall - then I'd say it was more that just a coincidence

Nothing yet to confirm whether the attacker is dead but a second person has been reported to have died.

Police chief: Westminster attacker acted alone and was inspired by international terrorism
Met Police deputy commissioner Mark Rowley is giving an update on the London terror attack.
He confirms four people were killed in the attack - PC Keith Palmer, the terrorist, a woman in her mid-40s and a man in his mid-50s.
A total of 29 people injured in the attack were taken to hospital - seven of which he says remain in a "critical" condition.
Six addresses have been searched by police since the attack and seven people arrested.
He adds it is still their belief the "attacker acted alone and was inspired by international terrorism".

Theresa May has told Parliament that the Westminster attacker was a British citizen who was known to police and security services.
In a statement in the House of Commons, the Prime Minister said the attacker was a "peripheral" figure who had once been investigated by MI5 over concerns about violent extremism.
She said: "His identity is known to the police and MI5 and when operational considerations allow, he will be publicly identified.
"What I can confirm is that the man was British-born and that some years ago he was once investigated by MI5 in relation to concerns about violent extremism.
"He was a peripheral figure. The case is historic. He was not part of the current intelligence picture.
"There was no prior intelligence of his intent or of the plot."

Attacker named as Khalid Masood, aged 52, say police.
Statement says:
Masood, aged 52 (25.12.1964), was born in Kent and detectives believe he was most recently living in the West Midlands. Masood was also known by a number of aliases.
Masood was not the subject of any current investigations and there was no prior intelligence about his intent to mount a terrorist attack.
However, he was known to police and has a range of previous convictions for assaults, including GBH, possession of offensive weapons and public order offences.
His first conviction was in November 1983 for criminal damage and his last conviction was in December 2003 for possession of a knife.
He has not been convicted for any terrorism offences.
