Marine 'A' Empty Marine 'A'

Post  Andrew Fri 16 Dec 2016, 9:02 am

This has been in the news a fair bit of late:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4039870/Hundreds-supporters-Marine-flock-court-learn-today-freed-Christmas-ahead-appeal-against-conviction-murdering-Taliban-fighter.html

He certainly should be released IMO.

Anyone else got any thoughts on it....

He was clearly heard admitting to the other soldiers that he had broken the Geneva Convention and that this should"go no further."
He broke the law, no matter how you look at it. What would be the outcry if, say, a German soldier had shot a British POW and evidence had emerged at the time.?. And what if that wounded British soldier had been your grandfather?
I don't hold with war and terrible things do happen but it looks to me as though Marine A committed this crime in cold blood. His unit commanders are being accused of not spotting the signs of exhaustion in the unit and of encouraging an atmosphere of aggression. It's war. It's nasty and violent and it's so unnecessary. It is the deployment of our soldiers in manufactured wars we should be railing against.
This was his statement in mitigation.
Blackman had denied murder, saying he believed the victim was already dead and he was taking out his anger on a corpse.
So why did we hear him, quite calmly asking his mates to keep quiet then admitting he had broken the GC?

To be honest, I knew next to nothing about it. I thought it was a 'kill or be killed' scenario.

Just watched this:

Shouldn't be released actually.

Being in a combat situation brings out all the worst psychological responses. Those that are unafraid would be verging on psychopathy and would kill without any feelings. But being afraid also brings out the killer instinct.

It destroys minds.

In the Vietnam war the soldiers were fed all sorts of speed like substances to make them more combative. No doubt it still goes on. I heard on Radio 4 the other night that it has recently been put in soldiers food without them knowing (but I was too late to hear which country it was).

All war is vile and I hate the Americans (and our stupid dipstick government, Theresa May, Michael Fallon and Boris Johnson for even suggesting that we may join the Americans in a strike in Syria).

No - not keen on films, especially if they`re disturbing. I can imagine what it`s like.

I think he must have been under incredible psychological stress and the original trial didn't acknowledge this, so I'm really glad he has a chance now to rebuild his life. I hope he gets protection because he could very easily become a target now. I wish him well.
