How dreadful this is, all those poor people.   That article says Spain has sent two waterbombing planes but the smoke is so low that it impedes visibility.   It must be almost impossible to contain.:   I saw a fire start on some hills in Spain a few years ago.  It began as a smoulder next to a road (the probability someone dropped a cigarette out a car window!) but suddenly the hills were blazing.  Firefighters and water bombing planes came quickly, but it made me realise how ineffectual man is against fire.  As we have seen in London recently        

"At least 58 people have been killed in a number of forest fires in central Portugal, as temperatures pass 40C.

The Portuguese government said many of the victims died in their cars as flames swept over a road.

Officials say a lightning strike is believed to have sparked the blaze.

Interior Ministry official Jorge Gomes said 16 people lost their lives in their vehicles between the towns of Figueiro dos Vinhos and Castanheira de Pera."
