[size=47]Michael Havis / Published 13th September 2017

Is this REALLY the man who took Maddie? There's a BIG problem with this sighting

IT’S the Maddie sighting that’s supposed to hold the key to the case, but what do we really know about the mysterious man in this notorious e-fit?

KEY TO THE CASE: The man pictured left has been thought of as vital to the investigation
Within an hour of Madeleine McCann disappearing in 2007, a child matching her description was seen in the arms of an unknown man.

He was heading towards the coast just 500 yards from where Maddie vanished in the Portuguese resort town of Praia da Luz.

So intriguing was the sighting that likenesses of the man were pulled together and later broadcast on Crimewatch.

MICHAEL HAVIS OBSCURED: The man's face would have been hidden by shadow, like this model's face

“I happen to believe he is Portuguese and innocent, but that’s not how he's depicted”

Yet while the world thinks of the man as a key piece of the puzzle, some say the sighting is a dead end.

Daily Star Online visited Praia da Luz and recreated the sighting 10 years after Maddie vanished.

At the same time of night and with similar lighting, we discovered how hard it was to get a good look at a face.

The street, Rua da Escola Primaria, is lit dimly lit by just a few street lamps, a sign from a nearby clinic and moonlight.

MICHAEL HAVIS CLOAKED IN SHADOW: The model's face was difficult to see from every angle

Photos of a model, which were taken at the scene and brightened afterwards to better simulate the view, show a face shrouded in shadow.

It’s also worth noting that e-fits are usually produced by an operator under the direction of a witness, in accordance with strict police guidelines.

The e-fits created from this sighting were assembled in 2008, several months after Madeleine disappeared, when witnesses were likelier to misremember.

On the other hand, if they were made without the direction of witnesses – but rather from their statements – the operator is likelier to have influenced the end result.

MICHAEL HAVIS MYSTERY MAN: The person (not pictured) has never been identified by investigators

Given these factors, some have concluded that the man – who was spotted and described by the Smith family from Ireland – is just an innocent bystander.

One local man with knowledge of the case said that, whether the man is innocent or not, "the e-fits almost certainly look nothing like him"

He told Daily Star Online: "I happen to believe he is Portuguese and innocent, but that’s not how he's depicted in Portuguese media.

"They showed the e-fits, but called him Scotland Yard’s chief suspect. They did not include that he might be totally innocent."

Other half of e fit not in article....the one that looks more like Gerry!

This piece seems to have totally ignored the fact that the Smith family passed this suspect and child in that narrow street, close enough for Mrs Smith to ask him a question!

I'm puzzled why the paper spent money on sending a 'journalist' and a photographer to Portugal to produce this non story.

All they have come up with is that the man seen was probably nothing to do with the 'abduction' and was an innocent bystander.

However they don't comment on why this innocent bystander has not come forward to eliminate himself from inquiries and thereby help the police.

I understand the 'hook' of the story is that its 10 years since maddie vanished. But the story is old news now, and so many people now don't believe the McCanns. They can see the negative comments that follow current McCann stories. So why did the paper think it worth investing their money in this? I'm wondering if the paper was encouraged to do this by a financial incentive ie to get the public to think that Smithman was not Gerry?

With the announcement of an appeal to the ECHR (an appeal most likely to fail but a good distraction none the less) and now this article casting doubt on key witnesses and a possible suspect, I strongly suspect that things are happening behind the scenes.

They read as blatant and clumsy attempts to control the narrative and keep the press on a leash.

IMO.

Its the positioning ahead of SY not getting any additional funding, they have the cards lined up,the papers will report, the McCanns who are were not suspects in the OG investigation are fighting to clear their names in the ECHR,the story is already told, imo and all that.

Has no one told M Havis that Mary Smith actually passed this guy and the child, and spoke to him? Has he not read the files either?

We haven't yet been advised that the Whitehall have granted the additional funding.  I may be wrong but on previous requests for further funding been granted almost immediately.
The last time was March 2017 and it was the Met Police who issued a statement saying the money had been granted.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4305014/McCanns-given-85-000-boost-fund-Madeleine-search.html#ixzz4b3z6CWzu

So ... We are now awaiting a statement to inform us if and how much further funding is to be granted. When they issue the statement they will no doubt give us an 'update' on how things are going as they have previosuly. This will be interesting!

Not quite sure what to make of this,I believe the blogger is more on the lines of an abduction believer.

Yes, it seems to be widely thought that this blogger is promoting the cause of the Mc Cann team, albeit trying to be subtle

With crecheman all but ruled out,SC supposedly knowing who Smithman is,that kinda leaves it even more difficult to maintain the abduction narrative,it means no one but no one saw any one walking around with a child who was not theirs.

The name suggests he's from the West of Scotland,

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ailsa_Craig

I was brought up in the country in the days before lights were on every road. It was amazing how much you could see if there was a little light, even if only from a partial moon. A camera cannot replicate easily what the human eye can focus on.
