The veteran detective who brought triple-murderer Levi Bellfield to justice still holds out hope that Madeleine­ McCann is alive - but says it is extremely­ unlikely.

Colin Sutton said the world may only discover what happened to the youngster if the culprit makes a death-bed confession.




He fears the case may never be solved - but said Kate and Gerry McCann must never give up hope of seeing their daughter again.

The ex-Scotland Yard policeman says there is no evidence the couple or their friends had anything to do with Madeleine’s disappearance from apartment 5A of the Ocean Club on May 3 2007. He says it will remain the biggest mystery of its time.


The tragedy is I don’t think we will ever know what happened. When Operation Grange finishes, and the indications are that will be in the next year or so, the case will never be re-investigated again.

“Whatever happened, it’s extremely unlikely Madeleine is still alive. That’s partly due to the huge publicity.

"Even if she was stolen to order, she may never have made it to where she was going. You would have had to be brazen to commit the crime.

“But you would have to be even more brazen to raise her as your own child amidst the worldwide publicity.

“Having said that, for as long as there is no evidence to say she is dead then the search must continue.

“Investigators have to assume she is alive and fully re-investigate the case from that aspect. For Kate and Gerry’s sake they have to continue to believe she is alive somewhere.

“The trafficking scenario is the strongest line and needs to continue to be looked at.

“But sadly after Operation Grange ends I think nobody will fully re-investigate­ the case. Therefore we will never know what happened.

“To find out the truth you’re relying on people who know things but have not come forward before.

“If someone has buried her but has a change of heart on their deathbed, there is always that chance.

"Or if someone has confided in somebody else and that relationship breaks down, that’s another possibility for the truth to emerge.

“But unless someone comes forward and tells us what really happened, then I’m afraid I don’t think we’ll ever know.

“It remains and may always remain the greatest mystery of our generation."

Mr Sutton said the culprit may have been identified if she had disappeared­ in the UK.

He blamed poor policing techniques­ and a lack of CCTV for the failure to crack the case.

“If Madeleine disappeared in Newquay, for example, I think we would have had a much better understanding of what happened,” he said.

“We might have known she was abducted by X or Y and we have his DNA but don’t know who he is.

“I think we would have had a better understanding of what happened and that may well have led to something.”

Interesting, but it's a shame he is asked to be treated with respect, and he has had the same treatment in the media as Pat Brown did, i.e. being misquoted, edited, etc. yet she is dissed by some as not doing her research about this news outlet. Well, I'm sure a seasoned cop would certainly know about how the papers behave, so it would be nice to have a bit of fairness and Pat Brown treated the same way. It has to be said!

Even the headline has an air of the invasive and clinical about it.

Hmm, a question, why would Colin Sutton not use his own name, but the username 'oatlandish', did he not want people to know who he was, if he did why bother with a username? Don't get that at all

Yes, it does seem a bit odd.

Let's assume that oatlandish is Colin Sutton but how did Tony and Co know who he is?
