Former detective Goncalo Amaral is ordered to pay 106,000 euros (£75,000) to Kate and Gerry McCann in libel damages.


Former detective Goncalo Amaral has been ordered to pay 106,000 euros (£75,000) to the parents of missing Madeleine McCann as their long-running libel trial comes to an end.

Mr Amaral was accused of making defamatory statements about Kate and Gerry McCann in a book he wrote.
The couple claimed his 2008 book The Truth Of The Lie damaged the search for their missing daughter and added to their anguish.
A court in Lisbon ruled against Mr Amaral, and ordered him to pay damages to the McCanns.
Madeleine went missing in May 2007 from the couple's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in the Algarve, and despite a worldwide hunt, she has never been found.
Last year, British and Portuguese police examined patches of ground in Praia da Luz, but had no success.

The withdrawal of the book was overturned from the original trial decision, so how can it now be overturned yet again???

Yes, he does, it is in the Telegraph article I think.

That's what was more or less expected. Better informed people will soon tell us  how and why.

It was always going to be a big enough number for the McCs to claim victory imo. So MSM can now spin to their hearts' content. It's not a victory for TM.

If GA now  still needs support, he'll get it, I'm sure. In the long run I think he's wins.

That is if it's £ 75 K - these conflicting numbers drive me mad! Surely BBC should know...

I think perhaps it is the same as last time, a story comes out and then we here another version.  This has been stated as a victory, but what exactly did the Judge say......let's wait and see

The judge must have been got at. It was more than obvious that the McCanns should have lost the case - their plead and witnesses were pathetic.

IMO they didn't want her "found" in the first place, that's why he had to be destroyed.

They were originally claiming the following:

1,200,000 Euros equals
858,979.91 Pounds Sterling


On the judges summing up previously there was one question that she did not say 'no case to answer' and I think that was number 15 or 16 from the list. It seems to me they have been awarded £75k for the hurt feelings. Thinking back we knew that they would be awarded something for that point.

Kate and Gerry McCann sued ex-police chief Goncalo Amaral, who led the search for their daughter, following claims he made about them in his book.
He has been ordered to pay damages, plus interest in excess of £70,000.
Madeleine went missing in the Portuguese holiday resort of Praia da Luz in 2007, aged three.
