A team of British forensic analysts are expected to join DCI Andy Redwood and his team of detectives in Portugal this week in a renewed bid to uncover the truth behind the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
Portuguese police sources told the Guardian that the scientists have asked to revisit some of the evidence retrieved from the holiday apartment from which the British toddler went missing on 3 May 2007. The forensic evidence gathered at the time of Madeleine’s disappearance has been stored at the National Institute for Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences in Coimbra in central Portugal.
Detectives and forensic technicians from the Metropolitan police are scheduled to visit the laboratory on Wednesday.
Detectives led by Redwood will meet with their Polícia Judiciária counterparts in Faro on Tuesday to discuss the request.
Police said they had not yet received any official orders from the public prosecutor’s office and that the next phase of the investigation was unlikely to commence for at least a fortnight.
A source close to the case told the Guardian that the request appeared “to focus primarily on the further questioning of some of the suspects brought in by Faro police in the summer”.
In July, Portuguese police quizzed four Portuguese nationals who were declared arguidos, or formal suspects. They also spoke to 11 witnesses.
The questioning of these suspects followed the end of major ground-level searches in Praia da Luz in early June, when Scotland Yard detectives scoured a large patch of scrubland.
The force described the operation as the largest overseas deployment ever undertaken by British police, and said it was the “first phase of this investigation” into Madeleine’s disappearance.
Although the searches turned up no fresh evidence, the Met said detectives had gained an “essential understanding of the activity for which people have used this piece of land” and alluded to “substantial work which is yet to be done in the coming months”.

So not looking for a live Maddie, then. Only looking for the perps. They could do worse than start off in Rothley.

Does this mean the samples won't be allowed to leave Portugal to be tested in UK?

That's the way I read it........do burglars or even child snatchers run around the apartment leaving lots of hair and DNA behind couch,on the walls and then take the same hire car and contaminate that?

You're right, no live Maddie. If they're looking at forensics it must have been the forensics from the apartment and hire car. Still doesn't look like a whitewash to me.

Could the British forensics test the samples in Portugal, or watch Portugal testing?

Yep, I know they wanted to bring them back to the UK, hopefully Portugal has refused, cause then we'll know they will be keeping their eyes and ears open.
IMO.

Re: Forensics to go with SY
Had to come out of retirement for one post because I've found the attention to detail in this thread a little frustrating ...
This story is from 13th October, it's not new. Also, the link is actually to an article about Ben Needham, not the story that's copy and pasted here.
OK, back into retirement to go, I'll leave this with the great detectives on this forum ;-)
PS. Well done Tigger

I messed up the link to this story and although it was dated I felt it was of interest (I certainly had not read it ) Maybe it's not breaking news so I could have posted it elsewhere.

You're too young to retire, WLBTS.
I hope that you will continue to pop back from time to time.

Sometimes it is easier and stops an argument. Your comment referred to 'sneering', I thought there was no need for that. I could see no sneering.

If having to come out of retirement to correct the great detective (only a ordinary citizen concerned with a missing child) isn't sneering I apologise

Bampots, nobody is sneering.
WLBTS, we need your experience on Photoshop and images on here.

Off topic - but with all the shenanigans that has gone on over at the other place, and let's face it, the majority of us are here due to opposing TB - then it is disappointing to see members here fall out, feel they have to leave, come out of retirement etc etc all because they have differing views.
Surely that's what a forum is all about - discussing differing views in a civil, polite manner. Or it should be.
Not like the nonsense that is CMoMM where you get hounded at, torn apart then banned for disagreeing you with know who.
For example - I enjoyed reading WLBTS' and Chop Suey's posts but because they both had extreme differing views (which I found was interesting, as I know little on photoshop) then both have left the forum.
That is a great shame IMO.
Personal feelings or whatever should be cast aside.
Surely this is all about getting truth and justice for Madeleine Beth McCann.
All IMO.

Re: Forensics to go with SY
Bampots, I wasn't sneering at you, just having a little light-hearted joke complete with a wink-wink emoticon. Please don't take it personally, and there's no need for a heated argument over it.
I'm reading threads, just not participating at the moment. I'll certainly have a few comments to say when we get some movement on the case and something to discuss. I'm interested in current events, not theorising. Fighting for truth and justice for Madeleine is a job for the police. If eventually it turns out that the police haven't done their job then it will be left to people such as us to take up the banner; but I'm confident that if enough concrete evidence is found then justice will be served by the people tasked with that responsibility.

I appreciate your reply......I hope you can see why I took umbrage, not knowing anyone on here when so many have a history can make putting ones head above the parapet daunting. I'm glad I know where you are coming from and look forward to reading your future post

Re: Forensics to go with SY
What with all the distractions - does anyone have a rough timeline/idea of the recent activities of both police forces?
I have to ask, no TV, no UK tabloids apart from DM selling at £2,00 here.
I did see Johanna's list of SY visits to Portugal. Can't find it, forgotten the name of the topic.
Recently there was a discussion on the forensic examination of hairs found in the car. All I've read - there's very little in the likes of the Telegraph and so on - is Blacksmith indicating a steady and apparently logical progression 'inwards' as it were.

Re: Forensics to go with SY
So Operation Grange was converted from review to investigation. Whatever conclusions them come to - what are they able to do with them? The crime took place in Portugal (or so we are led to believe) therefore what can SY so with their investigation ? I am not sure how these things work.
If the crime were in the UK and concerned a portuguese couple, and PJ decided to open their own investigation - what could they actually do wit their results?
OK, we have te fund based over here and if that turned out to be fraudulent then I guess the crime could be investigated and taken to court here.
Just wondering.. so if anyone can inform me then would be most appreciated
