Assuming there is a General Election in November -

If the Lib Dems  could even get back half of the voters that they lost in the 2015 election, they might just hold the balance of power in a hung parliament in which the Tories are the largest party

If they were to  campaign hard on a pro-EU ticket, it's quite possible

The Lib Dems could then stop Brexit happening

And if the majority of Tories don't want Brexit,  this would be the perfect way for the party as a whole to get out of it

Why, you ask, would the govt want to call a General election? Answer - because it might get them off the hook by creating a hung parliament

Cameron royally c**cked up by allowing the referendum in the first place, and by fronting up the Remain campaign he just added millions of votes to Leave

Yes thank you Costello, interesting stuff. Of course it was co ordinated, treachery backstabbing, you name it they are doing it. These people are supposed to work for us and this country, they only care about themselves!

Cllr John Edwards ‏@JohnEdwards33 ·

#skynews saying 'expect more Shadow Cabinet resignations in the morning'. Labour MPs are coordinating it with them. Treachery is the word.

The government could wait years before doing it (because they've no idea how to kick negotiations off), and by then there will have been much water under  the bridge. Meanwhile, lawyers all over the country will be looking for loopholes to stop Brexit, Scotland may yet prevent it happening, and time will drag other countries into the mayhem.  The two main political parties are in disarray and we may end up with a new centre-ground pro-EU party that would make a big impact at the next General Election. Don't bank on Brexit - it isn't going to happen folks

Exit for Brexit???

What a total joke this is becoming, they ask the nation to vote, but then don't take any notice and parliament decides.  Doh, what a mad contry this is.!  I do believe they knew this all along, all just a show to keep the plebs happy.

I've said all along it was all just for show. They didn't expect a Leave vote to happen but even if they did they knew they could overcome it. The referendum was always advisory only. Anyone ( by that I mean us ordinary Joes )who thinks they have a say in the running of any country is naive in the extreme.
Don't tell me the government didn't know that they would lose this case. If they didn't then someone needs sacking. This way the Tories can say they tried but it's out of their hands.

IMO May is brilliant, as I was expecting ;-)
Mine is an outsider view ...
with inside knowledge.
Good grace: a lot of important companies/banks already left the UK.
The country will go broke.
And this is indeed an excellent solution: staying within, profit from EU and not loose credibility.

Yes, I think the decision is theirs, a referendum is only advisory and does not have to be adhered to.  Waste of flippin time innit!

This was always the case. I tried to say this to a friend months ago who was banging on about "they have to leave because the people have spoken" He would not have it and told me to F off.

Nope. Face to face. He and I often have spats. One time he tried to tell me Monte Casino was north of Rome. I had been there 3 times and knew exactly where it was 80km SE of Rome. He shouted and blustered and called me an idiot. Had to phone me later to grudgingly apologise. He was thinking of somewhere else. And him an ex long distance lorry driver.
He still believes Madeleine was abducted. Says it all.

Off topic but I'm reminded of an ignoramus of a coach driver years ago who was giving a commentary of supposedly relevant things to where we were.

One "fact" was that it was Ramsay MacDonald who made the infamous "peace in our time" agreement with Hitler; another was that a certain house was Agatha Christie's when she was alive.

At the time she was still alive and kicking.

I think that everyone on the coach shouted out that she was alive but he wouldn't have it; was quite rude about it.

It wasn't long after that she did actually die and I hoped that Mr Ignoramus heard the news.

I am quite happy within the EU and shudder to think how low some of our regulatory standards will sink if we leave.

To be honest this outlook really puzzles me. Do you not think we as a nation are capable of putting decent regulatory standards in place ourselves? Why do we need an unelected body to do that? As far as I'm concerned our employment standards have fallen since we joined the EU, as have wages and standard of living in general. Whether the two can be linked is open to debate but that is my personal perception and experience.
