Goncalo Amaral said he had been the victim of “an attack against freedom of expression”.

He added: “I am a free man and like any other citizen in this country I have the right to express my opinions.”

Mr Amaral, 55, has been told to hand over £357,000 after accusing Kate McCann, 47, and her husband Gerry, 46, of covering up their missing daughter’s death in his best-selling book.

The ex-officer, who headed the initial investigation into Madeleine’s 2007 disappearance, is appealing the ruling by a Portuguese judge.

He claimed he had been “tried over an offence of opinion”.

Mr Amaral said the damages would bankrupt him.

He added: “My life is gone. I’m only alive due to my heart.”


He told Portuguese weekly magazine Nova Gente everything in his book was contained in official police files.

Yet the judge’s ruling meant the McCanns were “worth more than any Portuguese citizen dead or alive” and “above any god or divinity” in that they could not be “criticised, ridiculed and satirised”.


He said: “Look at the discussions about the terrorist attacks against French newspaper Charlie Hebdo.

“With my book I did not defame, nor did I have the intention to defame anyone, but merely to report what happened during the first five months of the investigation thus replying to the attacks against my good name and my professional dignity.”

Mr Amaral plans to countersue the McCanns. He said: “It is a fact that they lost their daughter but that doesn’t give them the right to sue anyone or to be compensated.”

The McCanns, who sought £1million damages, told the libel hearing they were “devastated” by his allegations

He has already stated his intention of suing the Mccanns, and their friends, but also the people most closely associated with the mendacious and vicious campaign against him

Given that some hold themselves out to be 'professionals', punitive and exemplary damages might well be the order of the day.
One can but hope.

At least the other side of the story is now in print for the public to read and digest, this can only be good and will alert many people to the injustice GA has faced for just putting into print the investigation as it was when he was forced to leave to clear his name - just as the McCann's have put their side in their book.

Threatened him with "costs of a third of a million" if ONE sentence could be shown to be libellous . . .Now sign. So he did.
Then they were able to show he had breached the undertaking, so he owed them a third of million.
BUT. . .
He asked one question - and to his eternal credit Tugendhat J allowed it ! !
And the answer, from the most feared Libel lawyers in the the entire WORLD was clear, and is on the record, under OATH, in the HIgh Court of England
They had no evidence of abduction.

They had been preparing the case for 3 YEARS- and had - - -   NOTHING
Not a smidgin of a suggestion of a possibility of a rumour of a . . .   NOTHING

Suddenly Carter-Ruck reduced their third of a million to a third of TB's State Pension . . .   Which may tell us something !

And gradually we begin to see the long term strategy of this venomous pair

The same is true of the police dogs - if any police dog had ever made the tiniest of mistakes in any investigation, anywhere in the world, it would be trumpeted across the internet as rock solid proof that dogs are notoriously unreliable.

Kate, fur coat and no knickers, McCann said "it was never about the money . . " It was never about anything else. It would be poetic justice if the McCanns' by their greed and arrogance (trying to destroy Mr Amaral and demanding a review) have engineers their own downfall.
