Hurricane Matthew
Bloody hell!!
More than three million people have been evacuated from Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina as the United States prepares for Hurricane Matthew to hit.
The biggest storm in a century will bring 150mph winds, tornadoes and a 12ft storm surge.

Fox News anchor Shep Smith issued a direct, bizarre and dire warning to his viewers just hours before Hurricane Matthew hit Florida.
'This moves 20 miles to the west, and you and everyone you know are dead,' Smith said on Fox News.
'All of you. Because you can't survive it.
'It's not possible, unless you are very, very lucky. And your kids die too.'
Blimey - imagine tuning into the news and listening to that..

Shake, rattle and roll...?
Crikey...! New Zealand's just been hit by a swarm of earthquakes -
- http://www.geonet.org.nz/quakes/felt -
- so much so that I feel seasick and in need of a stiff drink.
Luckily my house is old and wooden and bendy -
- I could hear the kitchen chandelier getting jangled - oof
and here's yet another one - perhaps it's the supermoon...?

Earthquakes in New Zealand
Hello Candyfloss - I'm fine, just jeezled and wide awake -
- like I reckon 99% of the country is...!
http://www.radionz.co.nz/news/national/318000/new-zealanders-in-shock-after-quake
The ground is still shaking and the aftershocks keep rolling in, up and down both islands.
My house looks slightly more ransacked than usual - cupboard doors open and stacks of books knocked over,
and one hen was knocked off her perch in the loquat tree, she's sleeping on the back step now -
- the Mother-Hen and babies in the kitchen are finally settling down after a near-miss with a falling speaker.
So yes, all OK here, but I am going to buy a bottle of whisky at first opportunity.

Trembling...
Hello Mimi, Heisenberg and Bluebell -
Thank you for your kind thoughts, it's been a long and jittery night -
- which, in the absence of anything to drink, I spent ironing...!
(and listening to the creek sloshing about)
I'm in the Rangitikei, so miles from the epicentre of the first earthquake -
but it was strong and long - upgraded to a 7.8.
There've been heaps of smaller quakes since, every few minutes -
poor Kaikoura seems to be getting hit the worst.
I haven't heard the milk trains run and the main road's pretty quiet -
- I think all the ferries have stopped, too.
The sun's coming up, so we'll be able to see what's happened soon.

Rosa. I have my fingers crossed for your country. Having experienced a strong earthquake, I do empathise. It's not so much the actual quake but the anticipation of what may be yet to come. Keep safe my dear. Xx

What absolute twats. The couple didn't have insurance. Who travels halfway round the world with 2 young kids having worked 7 days a week to save for a holiday of a lifetime then omits to spend a hundred quid on insurance?
Meanwhile people have died, lost their homes and their possessions. Grow up and stop your snivelling.

I understand it would have been a scary experience, but did I hear that man blaming the government??Rosa canina wrote:Some poor traumatised Poms stuck in Kaikoura without British Embassy support :

From that ^^ article it sounds like they were being looked after as well as can be expected when all is in crisis. imo
"We have to leave the kids' stuff behind, just leave it to goodwill. We have literally worked seven days a week for nearly a year for this trip and it's all ruined. It's cost us everything, we've put the mortgage up just to get out of here."
The couple didn't have insurance.
Meanwhile, local businessman Anton Evans, of Hunting and Fishing, was working with crews from South Pacific Helicopters ferrying all the stranded tourists in and out of town all day.
"We've run out of puff, we've run out of fuel, we've run out of light," Evans told the distraught family. "You'll be on the first flight [today]."
He offered to host the family for the night

Re: Hurricanes and other environmental catastrophes
Just on my phone so struggling to watch it at the mo....
Picture looks scary..... So what happened next? Did TB pop up floating in a shark outfit or something?
Or he blew so much wind, then everyone as usual 'goes away'.
And then we get more 'socks' created.
Funny old cycle.

Hurricanes and other environmental catastrophes
Whether this recent bombardment of hurricanes is down to global warming or not, I don`t know, but the USA seems to be receiving some punishment of late what with the drought in Texas then Hurricane Harvey swamping Texas out, followed by Irma heading towards Florida and another one beginning with J due to follow that.
http://edition.cnn.com/2017/09/09/us/hurricane-irma-cuba-florida/index.html
Then we have the earthquake in Mexico where far more people have died, yet it`s not priority with some of the news corporations it seems.

If everyone is leaving Florida, the looters are going to have a field day - it`s one of the richest areas. Mar Lago, Donald Trump`s place, has been closed down apparently - so are there any staff left there to protect all the valuables ?

Any looters should get thrown in general population of the state penitentiary.

Re: Hurricanes and other environmental catastrophes
Why has nobody thought to use dome houses in earthquake and hurricane areas of the world - the wind would slip right over them instead of taking roofs off. They could be on top of a basement for people to go and/or able to float in areas of flooding.

Some of those are quite stunning Mimi. I'd live in one, but I've always liked quirky homes. These are cheap and practical. I never did understand why homes are built from wood (and I'm not unaware it is often due to poverty) in hurricane zones. Every time there is a catastrophe they have to rebuild yet they still continue to use unsuitable materials.

I haven't looked at this video [having visitors] but I've read about HAARP many, many years ago and was quite unsettled ...
