A fund set up to help find Madeline McCann could be wiped out if her parents lose a court case which is due to start in the next few weeks.  

Kate and Gerry McCann are returning to court to fight against the ex-detective who claimed they were responsible for Madeline's death.

If they lose the case Madeline's parents will be forced to pay Goncalo Amaral £750,000, after he made a bid to sue them for compensation.

The couple will face Amaral in the European Court, as public money which was funding the search for Madeline is about to dry up.


Amaral, who wrote The Truth About The Lie concerning Madeleine's disappearance, claimed in the book that Kate and Gerry covered up her death in Portugal.

Following the claims the McCanns' pursued a libel case against him in 2015 and won, however it was later overturned and Amaral was given compensation.

A hearing is expecting this year after Amaral decided to sue the McCann's when their libel case was overturned.  


A legal representative for the McCanns lodged the final paperwork at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

Amaral recently claimed that his family has 'suffered' a lot from the ordeal, ahead of his court date.



A source told the Sun: 'It seems you can say anything you like about someone in Portugal, no matter how awful, and get away with it.

'If the European Court rules against them the trustees will decide on how best to make any payments.

'It would be a blow but Kate and Gerry would keep their heads up and carry on searching.'

There is currently ongoing discusses over extra funding for the continued search of Madeline, according to the Met Police.


However public cash is expected to dry up in a fortnight, reports the Sun.

Figures show that they is £728,508 left in the pot used to fund the search for Madeleine, which is mostly made up of public donations.

However it could be completely wiped out if the decision stands to award Amaral £430,000 as well as paying costs on top.


It is believed that Kate and Gerry have had to take money from the fund in the past to cover costs of previous hearings.

Retired Det Chief Insp Mick Neville, who last year investigated the case, said: 'It is tragic that funds to try to find her could be lost because of this legal action.

'There is every reason to believe she may be alive.'

The McCanns' Portuguese lawyer Isabel Duarte said: 'This will be our final appeal.

'The basis is the violation of my clients' fundamental rights.'

How can anyone state that with any conviction? What a load of tripe.

However, overall I think the tone of the story is positive as there is the suggestion that the McCanns are going to be hit where it really hurts them.

Wouldn't it be nice if some of these journalists, commenting that payment by the McCanns for their libel cases would wipe out the Fund, pointed out that the only available figures for the fund are almost 18 MONTHS OLD as they relate to the year ended 31 March 2017.

Another accounting year ended on 31 March 2018 but needless to say no accounts filed with Company House. No prizes for guessing they will be filed, as always on the last legal date 31 dec 2018.

Thanks. I haven't been here much as nothing meaningful is happening. I've had another think about the £430k and perhaps its the original €500,000 that the McCanns were awarded converted into sterling at the rate at the time of the original trial being misconstrued as "must pay to" instead of "failed to win from" (if you see what I mean)
