Kate and Gerry McCann lose a key adviser
KATE and Gerry McCann are mourning the loss of one of their main supporters as they anxiously wait to see if funding will continue for the Scotland Yard investigation into their daughter Madeleine’s disappearance.
Wealthy Michael Linnett, who died on August 4 aged 75, was the accountant for the Madeleine Fund for 10 years and advised the couple throughout that time.
The fund was set up to return Madeleine to her family and is partly funded by public donations, although it is not a charity.
Mr Linnett resigned from his post on May 3 this year – the 10th anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance – a few months after the resignation of the fund’s auditors haysmacintyre, a highly regarded firm of accountants and tax advisers based in London.
The two blows mean the couple will have to spend time sorting out the administration of the fund, which has been largely idle since the Yard launched Operation Grange in 2011.
Should the Home Office not sign off the latest application for funding from the Yard, then the couple also face the possibility of using some of the fund’s £715,000 to pay for private detectives.
In one of his last acts for the fund, Mr Linnett signed off the accounts for the company, Madeleine’s Fund: Leaving No Stone Unturned Ltd, for the year ended March 2016. It is believed he resigned on health grounds.
His funeral was held at the Divine Infant of Prague church in Syston, Leicestershire, near Rothley village, where the McCanns live with their twins Sean and Amelie.
