Re: The Jeremy Thorpe affair
I'm looking forward to seeing the programme.

My mother always voted Liberal and, at the time when Jeremy Thorpe was the leader, she was a member of the local Liberal Party's women's group. I don't think that they did much other than gossip and drink tea though!
There were comments on Jeremy's rather surprise marriage in 1968 but I don't think that anyone ever suspected that it could have been for political reasons, to create a more favourable image.
P.S. Here's the i-player link.

Re: The Jeremy Thorpe affair
It's got good reviews.....
A Very English Scandal episode one review: Hugh Grant is superb in absurdly entertaining drama
Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw prove an unmissable duo in A Very English Scandal, the new comedy drama which charts Liberal leader Jeremy Thorpe’s political downfall. Based on the ‘non-fiction’ novel by John Preston, A Very English Scandal spins a true story of political manoeuvring, forbidden affairs and alleged murder conspiracies through a comedic eye. This is amplified by screenwriter Russell T Davies, whose past work on Queer As Folk and the recent Cucumber trilogy blares loud through this witty, hilarious script. We’re introduced to Thorpe (Hugh Grant) sitting down with MP Peter Bessell (Alex Jennings) talking in code about their illegal flings with men. Before we’re given chance to gawp over Hugh Grant’s incredible aged make-up, we’re whisked across Thorpe’s keen-eyed first meeting with Norman (Ben Whishaw) as he cavorts around horse stables like a tame 70s porno. Hugh Grant as Jeremy Thorpe (Picture: BBC)This first engagement sets in motion a fleeting romance which soon spirals into bitterness, with Norman walking out in frustration. While Thorpe assumes he’s swept under the carpet, Norman isn’t quite ready to forget, creeping back into the MP’s family life and threatening to be a nuisance until he’s given a National Insurance card which will allow him to work and, essentially, survive. Its surprisingly jovial tone has rubbed some of the show’s subjects the wrong way, with the real Norman Scott not seeing the funny side of, what he states, is a story about ‘the total destruction of a person’

Re: The Jeremy Thorpe affair
This programme is to be shown after the final episode of the Jeremy Thorpe drama on Sunday.

It was expected that he would be found guilty and this programme was all ready to be shown but had to disappear quickly when he was cleared!

Re: The Jeremy Thorpe affair
I've just watched the last episode too and will watch the other programme tomorrow.
I wonder how true to life some of the scenes were. Did Norman Scott really write a 17 page highly detailed letter to Jeremy's mother?!
How difficult was it then - or even now - to obtain a duplicate National Insurance card, for goodness sake!
All in all, very entertaining and amusing at times.

Thank goodness for that, it really seemed a pointless exercise now that most of the people involved are dead.

The Jeremy Thorpe affair
Peter Cook's hilarious take on the judge's summing up in the Thorpe case.
