How higher they rise, the bigger they fall ...

Which reminds me of another saying [maybe only known in Dutch]: Whenever you go up on the ladder, take good care of the ones you surpass, because they are the ones you will meet when you're going down again.

And: Going upwards, because a lack of weight ;-)

Please don't ridicule me.... but....if all goes well for GA and his book is then allowed to be published elsewhere  -  do you think a

redtop here might come up with an offer to serialise it ??      Goodness, that would be brilliant.          bounce

eta    Chatelaine at 6.20 pm    Good post, I quite agree

It's the same sort of thing in English Châtelaine, "Be nice to people on the way up, because you might meet them again on the way back down" is how it usually goes.

@ Bluebell

Serialisation in English: that would be brilliant indeed [and sell newspapers too ...].

Do you think they actually employ reporters who write copy any more ?

Or are rags like the Express really just a room with half a dozen copy and paste monkeys ?

Journalism used to be a trade rather than a profession, and so attracted bright, ambitious and resourceful people who tended not to be of the establishment (their children tended to go to university and enter real professions). Over the past 40 years or so, journalism and TV presenting have become a great career option for the less-talented children of the well connected. Giles Coren, India Knight, Claudia Winkleman and William Sitwell spring to mind but there are lots more. Hardly surprising that with journalists like this in position, there's little appetite for questioning the establishment and rocking the boat.
Yes, you're right. Were there any 'schools' for journalists? If you read the late great Patrick Campbell, it looks like they  learned the trade from the bottom up in those days.
I had a friend who did a media course in Cheltenham as an adult student, what he said about the course and the students explains the kind of articles we read these days.

Thank you, Resistor. That's a much better translation [read: expression]. And I happen to know it is true. I always was "best" friends with a boss AND with his/her assistant, as they might be the next "boss" ...

ETA how nice you know how to use the ˆ :-)
