Seems that is just the interest to pay Mo, on top of the 500,00 thousand if I have got it right.  That is how I read it.

If they are eventually found culpable for the disappearance of Madeleine I wonder if they will have to pay this sum back to GA as well as all the £ms paid to them by newspaper groups.

If this is true then I give up. We have waited weeks for this in anticipation of a victory. Even GA himself thought he had won. I will wait to see what the official version says because the McCann team spun the last piece of news in their favour until the true result came out.

Former PJ inspector accused Madeleine's parents to be involved in the child's disappearance.


The former Inspector of Judicial Police (PJ) Gonçalo Amaral was ordered to pay 500,000 euros to the parents of Madeleine McCann, for damage caused by the publication of the book titled Maddie: The Truth of the Lie said on Tuesday Lusa agency lawyer of the British couple.

The civil court sentenced Gonçalo Amaral "payable to each of the first [Kate McCann and McCann Gearald] the indemnity amount of 250,000.00 (two hundred and fifty thousand euros) plus default interest at the legal rate of interest civilians from 5 January 2010 until full payment. "

Interest for late payment, according to the lawyer of the McCanns, are located at the moment in 106,000 euros.

In addition to this payment, the court also ordered the ban on the sale and new editions of the book, even prohibiting new editions of the DVD, as well as selling copyright book and DVD.

The court had already given to establish that the book of former PJ inspector Gonçalo Amaral caused damage to the parents of Madeleine McCann.

The defense of the parents of missing child claimed that the book was given as ready three days after the prosecutor of the Republic of Portimão, Magalhães Menezes, had written the order of termination of proceedings against the McCanns, dated notification July 29 2008.

In preparing the book, in which the former coordinator of the Criminal Investigation Department of the PJ in Portimão Gonçalo Amaral defended the thesis that Madeleine's parents were involved in the disappearance and concealment of the corpse of the child, the lawyer of the British family, Isabel Duarte, maintained that the author used unauthorized and prohibited pleadings.

This process creeps in court for over five years, with successive postponements of trial sessions and an attempted extrajudicial settlement between the parties, which was never realized.

In 2010, in the judgment of the book sales ban and the video with the same title, produced after documentary broadcast on TVI, the court decided to keep out of the market the two products that had been injunction target of temporary withdrawal.

In October 2010, the Lisbon Court of Relationship annulled the sale prohibition sentence of the book and the video and the British couple appealed to the Supreme Court, which rejected examine the use, in March 2011.

Madeleine McCann disappeared when he was four years in the tourist village of Aldeia da Luz, near Portimao, where the family was on vacation.

The case was recently reopened by prosecutors

I would hope they would have to pay GA back but I'm not bothered about the newspapers! A good stretch in HMS would do me.

I would hope they would have to pay GA back but I'm not bothered about the newspapers!  A good stretch in HMS would do me.

No mention of damages for the twins or Madeleine, not yet anyway.

Seeing as the McCanns have dragged the trial on for such a long time it does seem strange that GA has to pay interest from Jan 2010 when the McCanns could have shortened the time it has been dragged out.

So £357,000 plus £75,000 interest, not quite a million euros, but what happened to all those 'not proven' points the judge ruled on?

Mr Amaral wasn't the only defendant there was also the publisher and documentary maker and Kate and Gerry weren't the only plaintiffs - they've forgotten the twins and possibly Madeleine, no-one can agree on the amount and they all seem to think that the payout was due to libel.

It's McCann spin so I'll wait for the facts.

The couple had been expected to receive around £1m.


The court also prohibited any more sales of the book, and gave the publisher 60 days to return all existing copies.
It also ordered Valentim de Carvalho, who produced a TV documentary based on the book, not to sell any more copies of the film.

I wonder if the whole things is some sort of sick joke started by someone on the internet as they got fed up waiting for the decision to come out, a bit like the Royal baby waiting game really.

To the bolded. I thought both parties would be informed of the decision before it being made public?

I will refrain from exploding until I read a statement by GA.

Can someone explain how this judge can ban the book and video?  We were told repeatedly it was a damages trial, so how can she ban the book when it was overturned by  a Supreme Court after many appeals.  I just don't get this    Some twitter saying Amaral not yet notified, so how have the papers got hold of it.  Something not adding up, including the payout.

Let's hope it's a very delayed April Fool's joke..........
