Madeleine McCann’s parents are poised to launch a new private search for their daughter with the remaining £750,000 in their appeal fund.
Kate and Gerry, both 47, aim to begin a fresh initiative to solve the nine-year-old mystery as the £12million Scotland Yard investigation winds down.
Plans are under way to use what is left of the No Stone Unturned fund, boosted by sales of Kate’s book Madeleine, to hire private detectives to probe several unanswered questions.
A source told the Sunday People : “There is £750,000 in the account. That money has been preserved because Kate and Gerry knew they may want to reopen an investigation at some point.
“They have always said they’ll do anything they can to keep going. That commitment remains.”
The number of British officers working on the investigation , named Operation Grange, has been reduced from 29 to four.
The operation has cost £10million since it was launched four years ago following intervention from the Prime Minister.
A further £2million has been guaranteed by the Home Office until April.
The source added: “We don’t know exactly when Operation Grange will end but while it continues it has the finest technology and analysts.
“Private investigations are expensive and do not have anything like the range and capabilities available to the Yard.
“The McCanns still feel there are a lot of questions that remain unanswered but they still have full confidence in the Metropolitan Police .”
Madeleine disappeared from their holiday apartment in the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz in May 2007, shortly before her fourth birthday. Since then her parents have campaigned tirelessly.

12 million spent and still unanswered questions? What have OG been doing all this time? Or are these the 48 unanswered questions from the early days?

..... and I`m sure they can do so much better than the supposed best detectives in the world, all 37 of them with a £12,000,000 budget.

Its all spin me thinks.....no actual commitment as far as I can see, just "poised" to go. Timing is everything isn't it and don't forget it costs a lot of money!!!

Re: Madeleine McCann's parents to launch new private search with appeal fund's remaining £750k
This Mirror headline makes two important announcements. 1)The Fund is not going to be wound up and the remainder given to charity 2)The McCanns do not accept the findings of Operation Grange.
Going back to the ambiguous words of DCI Redwood at the beginning, Madeleine is alive, or sadly she is dead. As there have been no appeals from Operation Grange for the public to search for a live Madeleine, since OG opened in a blaze of publicity, it appears they have settled on the latter. Madeleine may not have left the apartment alive said DCI Redwood, a comment that directly implicates the parents, and one they did not dispute or challenge. And this was accompanied by the very public digging up of the areas surrounding Apartment 5A. Martin Brunt gamely tried to protect the parents innocence, by suggesting the abductor killed Madeleine in the apartment and then buried her in the immediate vicinity whilst the search was going on.
If the McCanns were genuinely satisfied with the work of Operation Grange, they would not be launching a new investigation of their own - starting a new investigation of their own shows the same disdain for the work of the British police as it showed to the work of the Portuguese police before them. It is not good enough for the McCanns because it has not given them the result they wanted. The world looking for a live Madeleine and donating to their private Fund.
That they are launching a new investigation of their own screams that things are not going well for the McCanns in the official police investigations, Operation Grange have wound down, but there are no signs that the Portuguese investigation will again be shelved. The Portuguese investigation is of course crucial, only they have the power to arrest and prosecute this case, yet they rarely, if eve,r get a mention in the McCann press releases and they didn't get a mention in this one.
More importantly, they have nothing of substance from Operation Grange to support their search for a live child and they have nothing from them that confirms their innocence or that points to an abduction having taken place. The trolls on twitter are still spamming the McCann hashtag with 4 year old statements made by DCI Redwood when OG was launched, there has been nothing to support the McCanns' abduction claim every since. If there had been, they would be using it now in their latest publicity campaign.
I didn't want to write anything mean before Christmas, but unfortunately the McCanns stated intention to continue this, leaves me with little choice. The remaining cash in the Madeleine Fund is not going to a good cause, it will continue to be used to con gullible people and to sue those who challenge the wickedness of their actions. Gerry and Kate are not going to accept the findings of the police in either country, and they are not going to retire to concentrate on their remaining children and their medical careers. As Kate said, this is her job now. If they are covering up the death of a child and conning the public in my opinion is not an honourable profession, and bringing misery and fear to the former detective who searched for their child, is pure evil. If they continue, so will I.

Re: Madeleine McCann's parents to launch new private search with appeal fund's remaining £750k
Surely at some point in the very near future OG have got to give a press conference to explain their conclusions of what has to be the most investigated case in living memory.
I've been following a case in America of a missing 2 and half year old boy and there are some things happening in that case (including the media and forums/social media) that seem to be aping what has gone on in this case. To the point Websleuths (I find the name very ironic now!) moderate the discussion about the case very differently to other cases IMO. Just like this case.
Probably should start a new thread somewhere....
Bottom line is OG have got to show their findings or make a move because I'm sure neither they or the government want the M's to start another media circus that would be their private investigation.

They're going to fund a private search using money from the fund are they? What happened to the money that was transferred from the fund into a special account specifically for the purpose of continuing the search?

Is it not the same money, as the report seems a repeat of an earlier one. This will be the start of their Christmas begging appeal.
