Shocking.....

England

An MP is in a critical condition after suffering serious injuries in an apparent shooting and stabbing attack in her constituency.

Unconfirmed reports suggest Jo Cox, Labour MP for Batley and Spen, was shot and stabbed. A man also suffered slight injuries.

A 52-year-old man was arrested near Market Street, Birstall, West Yorkshire Police said.

Ms Cox's assistant confirmed she had been attacked.

The MP was taken by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary, where armed police are stationed outside.

Live updates on this story

It is understood the MP was holding an advice surgery at Birstall Library before the attack.

An eyewitness said the 41-year-old mother of two was left lying and bleeding on the pavement after the incident.

Dreadful.

It's possible that she wasn't the intended victim.

Some reports said that two men had been involved in an argument in the street before Ms Cox intervened and was then attacked.

Media briefing at 17:00 according to BBC News website, expect it will be broadcast live.

Sounds such a vicious attack on this poor innocent woman. Shot 3 times (and in the face) and stabbed too.
Hope she recovers.

That's horrible. Scum of the earth. I'm not fan of death sentences, but life would be fine for me.

Sadly she has died.

Her children are only 3 and 5 years old - how dreadful.

I live in the village of birstall.

The whole place is in a state of shock. The man concerned was arrested around 100 metres from my partners house.

We're all struggling to get our heads around it to be honest.

I gather that the suspect has mental health issues but with no history of anything like this so it looks as if it couldn't have been foreseen.

A terrible event for everyone involved.

People who knew him, including his brother, give a description of the gunman as totally out of character.

One could almost predict something like this was going to happen. We have a divided society at the moment, both sides passionate and some very angry that their towns and villages are gradually being filled by foreigners. It only takes a vulnerable or mentally unstable person to take it to this level. I believe Mrs. Cox had been campaigning to take in more refugees and even saying that immigration enhanced our society. She should have had far more security around her, particularly being an MP in what must be an already tense town.

Batley:-
"Batley has a sizeable number residents with South Asian backgrounds, namely Pakistani (9.2%) and Indian (Gujarati) (15.9%). Heckmondwike also has a well-established South Asian community with 16.9% residents having Pakistani heritage."

A relative of mine lives around 6 doors down from him. He was a loner and strange and did have mental issues.

Birstall is a quiet and small market town and we're all in shock to be honest.

Batley does have a sizeable population of immigrants but Birstall doesn't. Birstall is not a tense town.

Why Westminster?. As the crime occurred in Yorkshire, shouldn't the trial take place there?

Not really sure froggy.  Got the below from Wiki, so maybe it is because this attack is being treated as 'terrorism-related' ?

The City of Westminster Magistrates' Court was a magistrates' court located at 70 Horseferry Road, in the City of Westminster, London. It was originally called Horseferry Road Magistrates' Court, after the road in which it was sited.[1] However, it was renamed in July 2006 following the closure of Bow Street Magistrates' Court. It served as the court where the Chief Magistrate of England and Wales sat, and all extradition and terrorism-related cases passed through the court. The court closed permanently on 22 September 2011, and was replaced on 27 September 2011 with Westminster Magistrates' Court, built on the site of Marylebone Magistrates' Court at 181 Marylebone Road.

Is anyone following the thread over the way about this? Some very interesting points being raised by Bluebag. I don't go much on his manner normally but I have to say he is picking up on some interesting thoughts.
