Financing for the four-strong team of officers working on Operation Grange was due to end in October.

But a fresh request, believed to be for a sum of around £100,000, was submitted to the Home Office as the deadline approached and has now been signed off.

A Whitehall source had indicated funding would be approved if “compelling evidence that justifies the use of additional taxpayers’ money” was provided by the team.

So what do you guys think? Is this a good sign or are they just extending this indefinitely until they can bury it?

I would dearly love to have more details of the Compelling evidence

Yes it would be nice to know what is classed has compelling evidence, Bluebell. I doubt we'll get that answered though.

Not sure if it is the case but I thought the funding for OG included paying the salaries of the officers? If that is correct then £100,000 would just about cover six months pay for the four officers on the case so this extension could simply be waiting for the conclusion of GA's case before they make a move. Whether you think OG is legit or not they wouldn't want to close the case or make arrests until after GA's case is finished I would think?

Aye up, if they had sod all then no way would even more money be 'signed off'. Why would they keep prolonging the outcome, especially after the clamour for Op Grange to end. Plenty of time to have 'whitewashed' or even 'covered up' as some like to think.. No, I think they must have something, (compelling?) just crossing the t's and dotting the i's - hope so anyway.

I suppose there's 2 ways of looking at this depending on the fence you're on....

They need 'compelling' evidence for the H.O to extend and sign off a further 100k. Which they've done and they've done and is great. All going well and positive news.

Or it's just dragging on and on and on and they really don't know how to end it.. It will continue until at least the end of this financial year and it may get reviewed again at this point...

Something for the optimists and the pessimists in this one...

Be interesting to know who the 'Whitehall source' is....

Yes I would agree TTWO. The £100k would cover the four officers pay for a further six months, similar to the £95k that was given in April. My thoughts are OG will have to continue until the outcome of the appeal is decided.

Why should the 2 be related though.....?

If they have compelling evidence then why sit back and wait to see what the outcome is regarding the Appeal decision etc?

Whatever is going on with Goncalo and the McCanns on a private matter should'nt have any bearing at all on a £12 million pound plus investigation..... Should it?

I don't believe anyone is "searching" for a missing child - lazy journalism, as usual.  I hope they're investigating the Fund.

Why doesn't SY release this news via their communications office rather than a tabloid?

This financial extension will take us very close to the tenth anniverary.  GA's appeal should have been resolved during this time - is this the reason?

Who is letting the press know now that Clarence is no longer the spokesman,allegedly.

Of course the cynics might say,the news or non news is hardly surprising given that poor Kerry/Ben Needham is the headline lately.

It's still on the the main front page of the Sunday Express online version.

There is no reference to it all though in google - when you type in Madeleine McCann and then click on News.

But if it's a bona fide investigation and SY are working in tandem with the PJ on this then the whole business between the McCanns and Goncalo should be irrelevant...

In a recent FOI request a reply to T Bennett was that the MPS do not apply for funding,yet the latest crap tells us that

So there is compelling evidence but yet the OG team remains at just 4,not that compelling to expand the operation again then.

The supreme court judgement is not expected any time soon then.

I agree with above.....why should Goncalos case effect Grange? Now if Grange had evidence pointing to the couples guilt and they held that until his case had finished surely that would be morally bankrupt.....you couldnt let a case run knowing the truth could you?

Thinking aloud and the closure of the investigation is all geared around Goncalo and the appeal verdict etc.... Maybe they (SY,PJ) know what the outcome will be. They know the McCanns will lose. The media floodgates will open up and it will be the end of the line for the McCanns and what can be said/reported.... This will 'prepare the public' before arrests will be made..... So they are sort of using Goncalo and the appeal business to soften the blow to the general public......

The McCanns don't and won't suppress any good and favourable news. So if it had been accepted then there'd be video footage circulating of Gerry shouting it from his own rooftop if that was the case.
