POLICE probing the disappearance of Madeleine McCann are examining a theory she was targeted by sex predators.

Officers have investigated 600 suspects including people seen acting suspiciously when she vanished.
But they still have a small number of lines of inquiry which are being pursued.
At least 38 child sex abusers were living near Praia da Luz in Portugal at the time of Madeleine’s disappearance.

Seven holidaymakers reported that children had been sexually assaulted – some in their beds.

Five happened before Madeleine vanished. While police have tracked down some people seen acting suspiciously at the time, not all of them have been traced, said the Met’s Mark Rowley.

The assistant commissioner for Specialist Operations said: “We have a significant line of enquiry that is worth pursuing. Until we have gone through it, I won’t know if we will get there or not.”



He said the probe had been a “hard slog” but the four Scotland Yard detectives assigned to the case could still solve it.

It is why the Home Office has given police an extra £154,000 to continue the probe – which has already cost £12million – until at least March.

Madeleine, then aged three, vanished from her family’s holiday apartment in Portugal in May 2007 while her parents dined in a nearby tapas bar.

I remember in an interview way back it was KM herself who mentioned attacks on children and never been told, until she learned of them in the files?

Chillingly, the McCanns learnt after the abduction that not only are such resorts an obvious target for paedophiles, but also that parents should have been warned to be vigilant. In 2008, when the Portuguese police officially stopped pursuing the case, their files revealed that in the three years preceding Madeleine’s disappearance, three intruders had been disturbed in children’s bedrooms within an hour’s drive of Praia de Luz and five children had been abused in their beds while on holiday in the Algarve. Evidence had not been collected, let alone collated or publicised.

Among the known paedophiles who could have been in the area are a British couple, Charles O’Neill, 48, and William Lauchlan, 34, both of whom are now in prison for murder in Britain. In May 2007, they were living in Spain, and possibly Portugal, on false passports. The previous year, they were posing as cleaners in a holiday villa complex in Gran Canaria when a child, Yeremi Vargas, went missing. Another possible suspect is Martin Ney, 40, who last month was arrested for the murder of Dennis Klein, a nine-year-old who vanished on a school trip in Germany in 2001. Ney resembles the photofit of the man seen carrying a child by one of the Tapas Seven, shortly before Madeleine’s bed was found empty.

Yes, ,( although it was Bill Henderson according to this) as this extract from the archive article just posted in that section, but it was also in the files....  


In the forthcoming book, Mrs McCann writes of her fear that her daughter was kidnapped by a paedophile and admits that she was at one time consumed by the mental image of her eldest child being 'defiled' by her abductor.
Mrs McCann and her husband Gerry, both of them doctors from Rothley in Leicestershire, were first warned of an alarming number of cases in the Algarve by Bill Henderson, the British consul in the region. He told the McCanns shortly after the abduction that there had been "several cases of men getting into bed with children". When police made public their files on the case in the summer of 2008, Mrs McCann discovered five cases of British children being sexually abused in their beds while on holiday and while their parents slept in another room.
The incidents are said to have occurred within a one-hour drive of Praia da Luz in the three years before Madeleine, then aged three, went missing on May 3rd 2007. She believes the Portuguese police failed to investigate any possible links between the cases and the disappearance of Madeleine.

MR: That has been one key line of enquiry. The reality is in any urban area, you cast your net wide and you find a whole range of offences and sex offenders who live nearby and those coincidences need to be sifted out; what is a coincidence and what could be linked to the investigation we are currently dealing with and just like we do in London we have been doing in Portugal so offences which could be linked have to be looked at and either ruled in or ruled out and that’s the work we have been doing

An important part of the Team McCann narrative from the very beginning of Madeleine's alleged abduction was the failure of the Portuguese police to act swiftly enough and to take their version of events seriously. This narrative was taken up by many of their friends and family and the press, too, weighed in with reports of swarthy 'sardine-munching' police taking long boozy lunch-breaks in the sun.

There was also a narrative advanced about how Portugal was some kind of paedophile paradise with reports of sexual assaults being ignored. Kate writes at length about various cases, allegedly involving British children on package holidays with their parents whereby an intruder would get into the apartments, climb into the children's beds and subject them to various forms of molestation. Kate claims that: 'The British tour operators had been keen for this information to remain confidential.' Apparently, the offender/s watched for patterns in the family routine, establishing 'weaknesses' in the security of the apartment and determining in advance where the parents and children slept.

'Cold shivers ran down my spine as it hit home that this might have applied to us' Kate writes (page 296 of her book).

According to Kate in her book the British consul for the Algarve, Bill Henderson, met her and Gerry at the police station when she and Gerry were first questioned on Friday 4th May 2007 (page 89). Kate writes  that she recalled Bill Henderson telling her that there had been several recent cases of men getting into bed with children, but no known abductions. She writes: "I don't know why this didn't ring a million alarm bells or sicken me to the core. As it was, it remained locked away in the dungeons of my mind for many months. At the time my brain simply couldn't connect such cases with Madeleine's disappearance. These were abuse victims, and as awful as such crimes were, Madeleine's situation was much worse. Our child had been stolen. We didn't know where or how she was."

The above is quite a good example of Kate's mindset, imo. On Friday 4th May 2007 the McCanns are not supposed to know what happened to Madeleine. They CLAIM she was abducted but how could they know this for sure, unless they witnessed it with their own eyes? Their friend Jane Tanner allegedly saw a man walking up the road from their apartment carrying a child who could have been Madeleine at around 9.15pm on that fateful Thursday evening. But Jane has no proof that it was Madeleine's abductor. It is simply an assumption with no evidence to support it.

Later on in her book, Kate returns to 'the record of sexual crimes against children in the Algarve'. This is curious subject matter because as far as I am aware (and I think this has been covered in some detail on various forums) there is no such record. She writes that she read of five cases of British children on holiday being sexually abused in their beds while their parents slept in another room. She goes on to write that in three further incidents, children encountered an intruder in their bedrooms, 'who was presumably disturbed before he had the chance to carry out an assault. I guessed these were the reports that Bill Henderson, the British consul at the time of Madeleine's abduction, had told me about.'

Is there any evidence at all that any of these assaults or attempted assaults occurred? Kate writes that the incidents had occurred within an hour's drive of Luz over the previous three years. 'The PJ had never mentioned any of them to us,' she states. 'In fact, I gathered from the files, some of them hadn't even been recorded by the authorities at the time they were reported......so they might never have come to light if the parents of these children hadn't been brave enough to come forward to the British police after Madeleine was taken and relive their nightmares. They did so in the belief that there could be a link between what had happened to their children and what had happened to her.'


Who are/were these families? Kate writes how it 'broke my hear to read the terrible accounts of these devastated parents and the experience of their poor children'. Is there any evidence at all that these crimes ever occurred?

Or was this all just part of the TM narrative of setting the scene for a child abduction in a lawless hinterland inhabited by paedophiles and sardine-munching bumbling police, where poor Madeleine was grabbed from her bed at night and taken by gypsies to a hellish liar in some far-flung corner of the world?

According to the new report, detectives in both the UK and Portugal are now focusing on 18 incidents during which male intruders allegedly broke into hotel rooms housed by families in the same area of the Algarve where the McCann family believed they were safe. Nine of the incidents involved British families. Three of the incidents took place in Praia de Luz, the area where the McCanns were vacationing, and one incident took place in the very same resort where young Madeleine disappeared. Five incidents took place in nearby Carvoeiro between 2004 and 2006 and the others took place just a few miles away in coastal resort towns. “Sufficient characteristics between the cases lead them to now believe that 18 matters in total concerning children may be potentially linked,” the Scotland Yard statement says.

Is there any evidence at all of these 18 incidents? Any evidence of the incident that is supposed to have taken place in the same resort?

ETA: Portuguese police have refused to enter a joint operative with Scotland Yard, not surprisingly, since all but one of the 18 break-ins now under investigation had been reported to them, calling into question the integrity of Portuguese police work. They had somehow failed to make a connection—or they chose not to make a connection—to the McCann disappearance.

Ah - there was a suspect, according to the story, and surprise, surprise, he is swarthy, fat, smelly, unshaven with slurred speech. You couldn't make it up, could you? Or could you? Can't we ever have an attractive suspect?

the suspect in several of the 18 break-ins fit the same description. He is reportedly a non-English-mother-tongue, olive-skinned, dark-haired, tubby man with distinctively bad body odor who was wearing a burgundy-colored long-sleeved top with a white “O” on the back. Some witnesses reported that he was unshaven and had slurred speech.


Police are especially interested in a 2005 sexual assault against a 10-year-old girl in the very resort in Praia de Luz where McCann disappeared two years later. The perpetrator had never been caught, but the girl had given a clear description of the attacker to police.

Any evidence of the above attack which is supposed to have happened at Ocean Club?

The latest twist follows a number of false leads in recent months, including the search for a trio of British cleaners, the release of e-fit composite photos of a Caucasian man and the Portuguese police naming a dead heroin addict from the Ivory Coast as their main suspect.


Who was the 'dead heroin addict' from the Ivory Coast that Portuguese police allegedly named as the main suspect? I thought that Portuguese police named the McCanns as the main suspects?

The McCann family has not officially commented on the latest Scotland Yard update, but like in previous leads, they undoubtedly view it as just one more step toward finding the truth about what happened to their daughter.

The nine British families involved have been suspiciously quiet.

Nowadays, if any dark-skinned foreigner abroad so much as glances at a UK child holidaying abroad, the child's parent(s) can't wait to sell their traumatic "almost abducted" tale to the highest bidder.

Add Portugal to the mix and the media would fall over themselves to get an exclusive. So, when Madeleine disappeared, where were the "it almost happened to us" articles?

That was dated 04.23.14

That was several months before police carried out extensive searches of the Luz area. Three specific areas were searched with police apparently finding nothing of interest. Perhaps not surprising given that the alleged abduction had happened over seven years previously. Plenty of time for evidence to be hidden or moved.

But I wonder why they decided to search those particular areas, and why then?

I look at it of one of three ways,there was/is something in the files not released,someone fed them false info,or they done it on a whim,you pays your money and takes a choice.
Remember the alleged burgalators were interviewed after the digs not before.

The digs were a diversion while they carried out other more important searches elsewhere.
