The parents of a five year-old boy who vanished from his home last week have been charged with his murder after his body was found. JoAnn Cunningham and Andrew Freund Sr were both charged with five counts of first-degree murder over claims they killed their son Andrew ‘AJ’ Freund Wednesday. One of the pair reportedly confessed to police, then turned on the other, and gave information on where AJ’s body was buried in Woodstock, Illinois. Police have not offered further details on which parent admitted the alleged crime. AJ was found in a shallow grave wrapped in plastic in a rural area nine miles from his home in Crystal Lake, with a coroner working to establish the cause of death. Crystal Lake Chief of Police Jim Black told a press conference Wednesday that AJ’s parents crumbled after being confronted with ‘forensic analysis of cellphone data’ obtained late Tuesday night.
He added: ‘Once presented (with this data) both Joann and Andrew sr provided information that ultimately led to what we believe is the recovery of AJ.’ Advertisementif(window.adverts) { adverts.addToArray({"pos": "mpu_mobile_top"}) } Advertisementif(window.adverts) { adverts.addToArray({"pos": "mpu_tablet"}) } Both parents have also been charged with multiple counts of aggravated battery, as well as failure to report a missing or child death. JoAnn Cunningham stopped cooperating with police last week after being warned by her lawyer George Kililis that she was being considered as a suspect. But further forensic analysis of her home saw her taken to Crystal Lake Police Station Wednesday morning, where she is said to have offered an explanation for her son’s death. AJ was last seen alive last Wednesday night, with his father making a frantic 911 call reporting him missing Thursday morning.
He and his younger brother were raised in a feces-strewn, dilapidated house which police say was littered with broken needles, and did not have electrical power. Police were called out to the family’s home 10 times in the last five years over fears AJ and his three year-old brother were living in squalor. Just yesterday JoAnn Cunningham went to court in an unsuccessful bid to have that child returned to her. That younger sibling is now being cared for by social services.
