Mother jailed for 11 years for killing Mikaeel Kular

Mother jailed for 11 years for killing Mikaeel Kular
Rosdeep Adekoya and Mikaeel Kular Rosdeep Adekoya was originally charged with murdering son Mikaeel Kular
The mother of three-year-old Mikaeel Kular has been jailed for 11 years after she admitted killing her son and hiding his body in a suitcase.
Mikaeel died two days after being beaten by Rosdeep Adekoya, 34, at the family's flat in Edinburgh in January.
She put his body in a suitcase before dumping it behind her sister's house 20 miles away in Kirkcaldy, Fife.
Adekoya originally told police that Mikaeel had disappeared from her home, leading to a major two-day search.
She had been charged with murder, but admitted the reduced charge of culpable homicide.
'Out of character'
Defence lawyer Brian McConnachie said while the assault was "undoubtedly serious" it was completely out of character.
He told the High Court in Edinburgh: "It took place over a short period of time and there is nothing to suggest that prior to that weekend there were any similar incidents."
Mr McConnachie added: "There is no sentence your lordship can impose which will be deemed sufficient by what appears to be an ill-informed mob, no doubt at this moment waiting to express their outrage and indignation."
Adekoya, who was wearing glasses, a black cardigan and burgundy jeans, cried and wiped away tears throughout her court appearance.
She had admitted wrapping Mikaeel's body in a duvet cover, putting it in a suitcase and driving to Dunvegan Avenue in Kirkcaldy, Fife, where she hid the case under a bush in woods behind a house.
Adekoya, who had a history of depression and attempted suicide in 2001, had called 999 to report her son missing to police.
She told officers he got out of bed and climbed on a stool to unlock the front door of his home.
Mikaeel died on the night of Tuesday 14 January from injuries inflicted the previous Sunday.
The final cause of death was found to be "blunt force abdominal trauma".
Mikaeel had more than 40 separate injuries to his body, including bruises to his back, chin and cheek, trauma to the brain, haemorrhage in the spinal cord and injuries to his arms.
Adekoya pleaded guilty to repeatedly punching her son and causing his body to hit against a hard object or inflicting blunt injuries on his head and body between 12 and 15 January at their home in Ferry Gait Crescent in the Drylaw area of the city.

Re: Miscellaneous Criminal Cases
This woman went beserk. Over a period of hours she subjected this poor child to suffering we cannot comprehend. Where were her other children when all this was going on? Where were the neighbours when she was doing the beatings, when this poor child was suffering?

Re: Miscellaneous Criminal Cases
I did wonder where the other children were.
I don't want to attach any blame to them of course but why didn't they say anything to anyone? Maybe they were terrorised into thinking that the same fate would befall them if they did.
There have been so many cases where children have been tortured over long periods and the neighbours never heard anything. I don't understand how that can happen.

Woman 'beheaded' in Edmonton garden
A woman is thought to have been beheaded in the garden of a north London house.
The victim was found at an address in Nightingale Road, Edmonton, at about 13:00 BST, police said.
Officers discovered her collapsed in a back garden and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and is in custody. Detectives said there is no suggestion the killing had a terrorist motive.
'Lives on the line'
A Taser was used during the arrest of the man and a firearms officer is believed to have suffered a broken wrist.
Police said they were initially called to reports of a man armed with a knife and eyewitnesses said he had attacked a car.
Speaking at the scene of the attack, Cdr Simon Letchford said:
"Officers had to do everything they could to make other people safe and evacuate houses and put their lives on the line to make sure this individual did not cause further harm," he said.
Police said they had traced the woman's next of kin, and were unwilling to speculate on the nature of the woman's injuries or the type of weapon used.
Det Ch Insp John Sandlin said: "I can understand why this may cause people concern, however we are confident that we are not looking for anyone else at this stage.
"Whilst it is too early to speculate on what the motive behind this attack was I am confident, based on the information currently available to me, that it is not terrorist related."
He added officers and specialist detectives would be on the scene for many hours to come.
'Jumping gardens'
Neighbour Muhammed Yusuf said police knocked on his door and asked him to leave the property.
He said: "They just said 'You've got to get out of the house'. Of course I was worried."
His son Ahmed, 19, said: "At first there were two police cars, then all of a sudden there were 20.
"The police said to drop everything. I said 'What's going on?' and they said there's a guy jumping over gardens."
London Ambulance Service said they sent a number of resources to the scene including London's Air Ambulance, an ambulance crew and a duty manager.
The BBC's Home Affairs Correspondent Danny Shaw said it is unknown at this stage whether the victim and the suspect were known to each other.
The case is being investigated by Scotland Yard's Homicide Command.
The police watchdog, the Independent Police Complaints Commission, has also been informed of the incident, police said.

Re: Miscellaneous Criminal Cases
Dreadful beyond words.
There was a case in Tenerife three years ago when a British woman was killed in a supermarket in the same way.
The killer could not be held responsible - he thought he was Jesus - but how could he have been allowed to roam the streets.
There was also this case in London in 2005. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/4347919.stm
I think that was a completely random attack too.

A tortured soul who never recovered from his daughter's murder.
I know that he already suffered from bipolar disorder but he was coping prior to then.

Re: Miscellaneous Criminal Cases
How very sad that he was tortured by the guilt of not being able to save his child. In those circumstances I would think it would be the real way any parent would feel.
I won`t draw the obvious comparison because there are those who do not know what real suffering is.

I maintain that the MBM case will change course when some major life event happens. A divorce, a life threatening illness or such. There are far too many bit players involved for them all to stay silent for ever. Or is the threat of ruin greater than living with their collective consciences?

Cops: Woman killed boy, falsely reported abduction
Very sad upsetting story......
Cops: Woman killed boy, falsely reported abduction
BERNE, N.Y. (AP) — A 19-year old New York woman is accused of killing a 5-year-old cousin in her care and then calling in a false report that two masked intruders took the boy from their Albany-area home.
Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple says Tiffany VanAlstyne is being arraigned on a second-degree murder charge in the killing of Kenneth White.
He says VanAlstyne strangled the boy and tossed his body "like a piece of trash" into a culvert across the street sometime before making the bogus 911 call Thursday afternoon in the town of Berne.

Child sexual assault in South Yorkshire
BBC NewsUK http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-31852118
Sheffield victim: 'The men who exploited me got away with it'
An investigation by BBC News has discovered that South Yorkshire Police knew that hundreds of girls were at risk of ongoing sexual abuse in Sheffield but failed to investigate many allegations.
Reports and documents obtained by the BBC, as well as interviews with former officers, show how the force ended investigations into child sexual exploitation and ignored intelligence that girls as young as 12 were being raped and physically assaulted.
This is the story of one woman who was sexually exploited as a teenager in Sheffield. Her perpetrators were never brought to justice. She later got help from the Golddigger Trust and spoke to BBC producer, Vanessa Clark
Anyone else just listened to Radio 4 News at 5 ?
Dear God, how dreadful this is.
It was reported that burglaries etc. took priority over what was known about child sexual exploitation.
Who is to blame here? It seems from what I heard that it would be the superiors in the Force that dismissed/ignored what was known, and their
subordinates did what they were told.
I am so, so, angry about this. How helpless is it possible to feel.
Perhaps this isn't for discussion here, but I wanted to rant about it anyway.
