Re: Sir Cliff Richard
Singer's name was heard in report about Dame Janet Smith review of BBC
His lawyers have reportedly threatened the corporation with court action
Singer was not named in Dame Janet's report and has faced no action after police probe
Sir Cliff Richard is reportedly ready to sue the BBC over a news report about Jimmy Savile's sex crimes which used his name.
BBC News at Six last Thursday featured a report about Dame Janet Smith's investigation into sex abuse at the corporation.
As part of the segment, Savile's voice was heard saying Cliff Richard's name, something the singer claims was unnecessary and potentially libellous.
The clip was used after a voice-over speaking about missed opportunities in stopping showbiz paedophiles Jimmy Savile and Stuart Hall.
According The Sun, an email sent to BBC staff by bosses states: 'The libel complaint says the inclusion of archive footage of Jimmy Savile stating the words 'Cliff Richard' is defamatory of Sir Cliff Richard, causing the viewer to believe that there were missed opportunities at BBC to apprehend Cliff Richard for wrongdoing.'
Sir Cliff has warned the corporation that any further use of the clip in which Savile says his name could prompt legal action.
Sir Cliff, 75, was the subject of a police investigation in 2014, but has faced no action since then.
The BBC was also criticised over its handling of that investigation, after it broadcast live from outside the star's Berkshire home while police searched the property.
Dame Janet Smith's investigation into the Jimmy Savile sex abuse scandal cleared the BBC of wrongdoing last Thursday.
But it painted a damning portrait of an institution where employees were afraid to raise even serious concerns about sexual misconduct for fear of upsetting celebrity talent or making the corporation look bad.
Sir Cliff Richard was not mentioned in Dame Janet's report. Representatives of Cliff Richard and the BBC have been contacted for comment

Cliff Richard Abuse Allegations Handed To CPS
Prosecutors say they will "carefully consider" the file of evidence passed on by South Yorkshire Police.
A file of evidence relating to allegations of historical sex abuse by Sir Cliff Richard has been passed to prosecutors.
The file was handed to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) by South Yorkshire Police who have been investigating the 75-year-old entertainer.
The CPS said it will "carefully consider" whether to bring charges or not.
"We have received a full file of evidence from South Yorkshire Police," a CPS spokesman said.

Sir Cliff's Berkshire home was searched during the investigation
"We will now carefully consider its contents in line with the Code for Crown Prosecutors, in order to establish whether there is sufficient evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction, and whether it is in the public interest to do so."
Sir Cliff has denied any wrongdoing.
His Berkshire home was searched by officers in August 2014 and he has spoken to police twice as part of their investigation.
A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "Investigation files relating to allegations of non-recent sexual abuse involving a 75-year-old man have been handed over to the CPS.
"The CPS will now consider the matter and South Yorkshire Police awaits their decision."

Will it be in the public interest for it all to come out in the wash when he's snuffed it then. And not before.
Bit like JS...

Re: Sir Cliff Richard
The abbreviated link address is a bit unfortunate - "Sir Cliff Richard consumed sex".........
Fish and chips for me, thanks.
I can't help wondering if he does have something to hide - if he hasn't, why look so worried?

I think whether you were guilty or innocent, it would destroy you. Imagine being accused of one of the worst things imaginable if you are innocent. And if you are guilty the realisation of an impending trial, the destruction of your career, the isolation and shame that will be (rightly) heaped on you, would play havoc.

No, but it might as well be. A sham of an investigation imo

I hope that the claims are false. It is the police's job to investigate them though - imagine the hoo-haa if they didn't because he is so well known.

I have to say I have my reservations, always have. I can't see this going to court,I think they are just being seen to be going through the motions.

......or roller-staked as the story says.
It sounds rather bizarre, to put it mildly. Perhaps it was while he making this video?!

Re: Sir Cliff Richard
The more I think about it, the more bizarre the roller skate story is.
We don't know how old the child was but let's assume pre-teenage. Would a child have even heard of Cliff Richard, let alone recognise him? Cliff has had an army of fans over the years but not in such a young age group.
Were there any adults in the shop who witnessed what happened? If so, why didn't they do anything?
It sounds totally unbelievable.

Re: Sir Cliff Richard
Yeah, I must say this particular story seems a bit odd. Rubbish even.
Cliff roller skates down the street then skates into a shop, decides to molester a youngster in the shop then skates off home when he's done.
Did he purchase anything I wonder.

Re: Sir Cliff Richard
Perhaps because when a case goes to court, all kinds of information about the defendant will be introduced by the prosecution, and that can then (usually) be repeated in the media. Not things that are illegal - private things that you had preferred to keep quiet. To assume guilt on the basis that he looks worried is preposterous, FreedomFreedom wrote:I can't help wondering if he does have something to hide - if he hasn't, why look so worried?

Re: Sir Cliff Richard
You probably argue with signposts, Satsuma!
I would like to think that it is possible for legal activities to be kept out of any court proceedings and only any alleged illegal ones to be raised.
