Adam Johnson charged with child sex offences

Premier League player Adam Johnson has been arrested on suspicion of having sex with a girl under 16, according to Sky sources.

The Sunderland footballer was detained earlier in the day and remains in police custody, said Durham Police.

Johnson is helping officers with their enquiries, the force added.

In a statement, police said: "A 27-year-old man was arrested earlier today on suspicion of sexual activity with a girl under 16.

"He remains in police custody and is helping officers with their enquiries."

Apparently the girl is 15 so we aren't talking of a very young child.

I've never heard of him so am not trying to make light of the charge but I think that her age does make a difference.

It reminds me of the photos where you can get yourself pictured apparently with a celebrity - a friend has one of herself and Daniel Craig - but of course they're as genuine as some of the McCanns' photos; sorry, as genuine as a nine bob note.

Yeah I suppose sexual activity (slap and tickle with a minor) but he didn't actually have sex with her. A charge of grooming as well I think.

Certainly not condoning it by the way by pointing that out.

You're right to point this out, Andrew. I'd made assumptions without reading the details of the case.

In my opinion the sentence is too harsh. Do we know if AJ was aware of the girl's actual age?

If you read between the lines of this post you will work out exactly what act he was allegedly fingered for.
