The British investigation into Madeleine McCann's disappearance will finish in the next few months unless new evidence emerges, police have said.
A small team of officers are following one remaining line of inquiry into the three-year-old's disappearance while on holiday with her parents in Portugal in 2007.
They have been granted £95,000 Home Office funding to keep the probe going for another few months.
Scotland Yard boss Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, speaking on LBC, said the remaining line of inquiry is one that "everybody agrees is worthwhile pursuing."

The investigating team, which began in 2011, has been reduced from 30 to three in recent years.
During the probe, named Operation Grange, detectives highlighted a sex offender who had targeted British families with young children staying in villas in the same area where Madeleine was last seen.

Sir Bernard said "a missing child inquiry is never closed" but the current probe will conclude if the remaining line of inquiry does not prove fruitful.

There's been a lot of investigation time spent on this terrible case.
It's a child who went missing, everybody wants to know if she is alive and if she is where is she, and sadly if she's dead then we need to give some comfort to the family.
It's needed us to carry out an investigation together with the Portuguese and other countries have been involved.
There is a line of inquiry that remains to be concluded and it's expected that in the coming months that will happen.
...If somebody comes forward and gives us good evidence we will follow it. We always say that a missing child inquiry is never closed.

Last week Detective Chief Superintendent Mick Duthie, who is head of the force's murder squad, said there was a "possibility" Madeleine could be found alive.
"There is ongoing work," he said. "There is always a possibility that we will find Madeleine and we hope that we will find her alive."

Is it? I haven't heard before that there is only one last lead being followed to its inevitable conclusion.

Not heard them come out either saying 'they are following one remaining line of enquiry'....

Lets hope it's the only one left which is the truthful one (and obvious one).

I don't see how they could say anything else though.

If they are planning arrests or passing the results of the investigation to the PJ, they have to be careful not to push the McCanns over the edge with possibly tragic consequences. Remember Kate wanted to push a button and they'd all be together.

I think this is a move to close or resolve the mystery that is Madeleine McCann.They could have put out these press stories days ago if all that was required was to hide the result for Goncalo Amaral,in fact if that was the objective they have made a hash of it. One lead worth pursuing,one homicide detective and possibly one month to go?
Everything is in place to tie up the ends.....the  big picture emerges with resolution for Goncalo.....  Watch this space!!

I like the way they put ONE in capitals there.

They missed out the word 'obvious' after it though but never mind.

Another quote from BHH...

So what other countries have been involved then....... ?

"The remaining line of inquiry is centred around a letter asking for assistance sent from UK investigators to the Portuguese Public Prosecution Service in July 2015"

I wonder what that letter was all about then.....

I'm with those that see this as a potentially very positive story.

Taken along with the damages court case outcome, the looming threat of GA suing, and the coverage of the Portuguese TV special, and the not-rabid-for-once reactions overall by the UK media, the McCanns could be feeling some pressure. Hopefully - as was pointed out earlier in the thread by Poe - not enough that they do something terrible though.

'Could finish in a few months unless new evidence comes forward', sounds more like winding it down without a resolution than following a very strong lead and nailing those final loose ends to me.

Wasn't there some talk last year of asking to test the forensic evidence held in Coimbra? Curtains I think.
I think the Portuguese were not too happy to let SY test it outside PT. Correct me if I'm wrong.

But wasn't/isn't the SY remit to review the investigation carried out by the PJ ? So finally and with much publicity and enormous expense SY have "reviewed" what was done originally - and doubtless found no fault or lack with the original PJ investigation, or have I got it all wrong
What is more important (I feel) is for the PJ to reopen the shelved investigation at their end. I never expected SY to come up with answers - just IMO.

The PJ reopened their investigation in October 2013 as new evidence came to light... IIRC.

What that evidence is then I have no idea.
