I presume so. This was supposed to be a criminal investigation and it is part of a criminal investigation for police to take statements which are made under oath.

Don't forget, the McCanns and their friends also made statements under oath.

It is a serious offence to lie under oath.

Can you actually sue anyone for comments made in a police statement?

Witness statements are not made under oath. A statement maybe made under caution 'You do not have to say anything.....' etc in certain circumstances.An oath 'I swear by almighty God.... etc is made if you give evidence in court.
The below is a copy of the MG 11 form that a witness signs when they make a statement

This statement (consisting of ......1...... Pages(s) each signed by me) is true to the best of my knowledge and belief and I make it knowing that, if it is tendered in evidence, I shall be liable to prosecution if I have wilfully stated in it, anything which I know to be false, or do not believe to be true.

Quite so - it is therefore a criminal offence to lie in a witness statement which is similar to making a statement under oath - i.e: you pledge that it is a statement of truth.

The Mcs and their friends all gave statements and Kate write a book of 'the truth'.

ETA: why should there be one law for them and another for everyone else?

The slight but significant difference here is the wording of 'knowledge and belief' and 'deliberately'. This allows for accidental errors and omissions etc

The McCanns appear to fail to appreciate the irony behind their threats. I am sure there are a great many people who would report the McCanns to the police even if only on the grounds of neglect...
