Sounded as if he was told to wrap it up for fear of overstepping the mark - his interviews normally go on much longer than that; they needed a spokesperson from the Met to confirm or deny what she was saying. A unusually poor effort from Ferrari and his team there, normally much more incisive

Public outrage as Madeleine McCann search given more taxpayers' money
MORE taxpayers’ cash is being put into the £12million police search for Madeleine McCann.
By Jerry Lawton / Published 28th March 2018
snipped from article...
But the extra cash sparked a Twitter backlash.
Coronation Street actor Louis Emerick, 64, who plays Mike Thornberry in the soap, tweeted: “£11m+ spent so far, police granted more funds! Shudnt every missing child be granted the same?”
Celebrity Big Brother and Benefits Street star Dee Kelly said: “Seriously – what’s the difference between #MadelineMcCann and others like @findcorrie #CorrieMcKeague or the hundreds of thousands of others in the country/world #missing.”
Former X Factor champ Steve Brookstein wrote: “Madeleine McCann is never gonna be found. Total waste of public money.”
https://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/latest-news/691979/Madeleine-McCann-search-12-million-police-praia-da-luz-algarve-public-outrage
It is helpful though - if the idea is to drag Operation Grange out for as long as possible and make it something the public demand to be closed as they see it as waste of time and money. If the investigation is incompetent, even better. They can say 'lessons will be learned' and have some toothless inquiry about the whole thing and how it was ( accidentally on purpose) messed up. Either that or say it's unsolvable. Problem, reaction, solution.
I don't agree with these people saying it's a waste and saying all missing children should get the same. If there is a child killer out there, the child that was killed deserves justice. It's not about the parents.....or rather it should be!
The difference with most missing children is that they don't just disappear, usually they are found and usually it's some kind of custody issue if they are young, or they runaway if teens. A grown man going missing under his own steam ( and drunk) is also a bit different than a potential child abuser / abductor or killer ( maybe all three) that has gone unpunished for years.

Given that there is much evidence that Madeleine died that week (cadaver dog alerts) and this is the conclusion of the Portuguese police, then I can understand the frustration over continuing funding. It must be known by the police, imo, that Madeleine cannot be found alive so why does this farce continue?
What is the 'end game?'

Re: *UPDATE MORE FUNDS GRANTED TO CONTINUE - Scotland Yard ask for more money to carry on investigation into Madeleine case
Actually I think it keeps up the pressure on the McCanns and their Tapas friends. Imagine it from their point of view. Kate and Gerry wanted an inquiry. They got their inquiry. Perhaps they believed it would mark the end of police interest in their case and perhaps they believed that conclusions would be drawn that would finally "clear" them from ongoing suspicion.
Is this what has happened? No. The case is ongoing. Every six months, another request for funding is made, and the funding is given. A small amount, we say. A pittance. But it's enough to let Kate and Gerry know that they haven't dropped off Scotland Yard's radar. And that in spite of all of the misleading press stories we keep getting identifying mystery women in purple and final lines of inquiry involving martians who landed in Bulgaria who may be suspect, the inquiry is still on, the files are still open, and there is no closure for Kate and Gerry. They may have to live with the possibility of new technology solving their case for their entire lives. Not a pleasant thought, I suspect.

Yes, I think they wanted their names to be cleared. Why they didn't just put their heads down when the case was shelved? Their hubris will be their downfall, imo. As you say, it must be a horrible way to live. The comments following stories suggest that they are deeply unpopular with the public now.

I think this is another case where police knew from early on that the child could not be found alive. The story just does not add up, imo, and I think there is every indication that Ben went off on his young Uncle's moped. There is a whole afternoon unaccounted for which I think is a massive red flag.

In my opinion, nothing. The amounts of money being discussed are just about enough to keep the file nominally open. I doubt there's any actual work being done, or any dedicated staff.
Looking for something to do on a cold and wet Easter Saturday I found this.
https://homeofficemedia.blog.gov.uk/2018/03/27/home-office-in-the-media-27-march-2018/
Special Grant funding for Operation Grange
The Express, Sun, Independent, Star, Mirror and Daily Mail all lead today on the Home Office announcement that the Government remains committed to the investigation, and that we have briefed the Metropolitan Police Service that its application for Special Grant funding will be granted to support the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
The Mail states that detectives applied for more funding last month, and that Government funding has been granted every six months, with £154,000 being granted from October last year.
The Express carries a statement by the McCann’s saying they are “incredibly grateful”
Sky News, ITV News and BBC all state that police have been given more cash in the search efforts of Madeleine McCann, and speculate that more than £11 million has already been spent on the investigation.
The Home Office statement is below:
A Home Office spokesperson said:
The Government remains committed to the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann (Operation Grange). We have briefed the MPS that its application for Special Grant funding for Operation Grange will be granted.
Now search the MET site there is nothing pertaining to any last line of enquiry, only the last update in October 2015

MADDIE CASH ROW
Latest Madeleine McCann search fund boost could be £150,000 of taxpayers’ cash and is being kept secret

The Met Police has applied for extra funding but the Home Office has refused to say how the amount as it confirmed the money had already been approved
THE Government has approved a fresh cash grant for the Madeleine McCann search fund - but the amount is being kept secret amid fears of a public backlash.
Scotland Yard has applied for the funding, which is believed to be as much as £150,000 - the equivalent of four London Police officers - as the hunt for the missing youngster continues.
As Home Office cuts to police are being linked to the increase of violent crime across the capital, ex-detectives and taxpayers’ are questioning why a seven-year investigation into the missing girl is still ongoing.
Home Secretary Amber Rudd is understood to have blocked the amount earmarked for Operation Grange being revealed.
This came after a document leaked from her department last week linked cuts to policing with a rise in stabbings, shootings and acid attacks.
Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry McCann face the painful 11th anniversary of their daughter’s disappearance in just over a fortnight.

This part is interesting:
“There is a lot of sensitivity surrounding this case and it is a challenging time for the Government."
Is it here the cover up is buried?

But what is the senstivity?
And why is it a challenging time for the Gov?
Officially, it's a missing person we are talking about here who went missing 11 years ago, what's still the "sensitivity surroundings" 11 years later?
It sounds like blackmail between the lines.

Agree, @Niklasericson. This isn't speculation by the ridiculous Kandohla. It's a direct quote from a Government official:
A Home Office spokesperson said: “We are not publicising the figure applied for by the Metropolitan Police and the amount given this time.
“There is a lot of sensitivity surrounding this case and it is a challenging time for the Government.
“We remain committed to the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine and advised the MPS last month that an application for Special Grant funding is being granted.”
What is "Special Grant" funding - is it different to the previous monetary sources made available for OG? This is the first time the amount has been kept secret too.
Has something changed?

Re: *UPDATE MORE FUNDS GRANTED TO CONTINUE - Scotland Yard ask for more money to carry on investigation into Madeleine case
I looked up 'Special Grant Funding' and it is money paid directly by the Home Office, so the money does not come out of normal police budgets. In 2016/17 OG asked for £300,000 initially which went up to £330, 000 actual cost according to the Home Office records. There isn't a mention of this funding for the previous year so the funding may have changed 2014/15 and become 'special'.
I do think it's interesting they haven't revealed the amount but if the funding was to suddenly increase then this would fuel further speculation and could alert potential suspects that the net is closing, perhaps?

It is strange.
And they acknowledge the 'sensitivity' of the case (sensitive to whom, exactly?) and refer to it being a 'challenging time' for the government.
Now why would the government feel challenged...?

My feeling is the government doesn't want to be left with egg on its face, so OG must have put a darn good proposition to the Home Office to obtain further funding. I don't buy the argument that they simply don't know how to end it, that's burying your head in the sand way too deep. My guess is they are closing in, I can't see any other explanation...

Wood for the trees, why would they refuse to comment but then comment on the sensitivity of it,pure bunkum by the spokesperson.
Scotland yard aren't divulging a thing, blacksmith summed it up succinctly with
It's the fact that people with their liberty at risk aren't frightened of buffoonish and failed investigations: they lie awake at night wondering how to deflect the scary ones, those that are on the right track.

I believe it has been direct funding from the Home Office from the beginning, and the money never came out of the police budget.

It sounds like blackmail between the lines.
The sensitivity could be due to the nature of the case, UK public not believing the McCanns and possibly the diplomatic and government consequences of admitting that the UK wrongly put pressure on Portugal at the time.
I took the 'challenging time for the government' to mean the wider situation at the moment. We have Police cuts (Thanks to Theresa May) which seems to have resulted in a surge in knife crime. We had the Grenfell tower incident last year and many victims still not rehoused.
It's challenging for them to justify this money because many people are getting extremely angry about how public money is spent when costs of living rise and crime seems out of control.
