Madeleine McCann's mother teams up with posties to help in the hunt for missing children

[*]By Russell Myers
Madeleine McCann’s mother Kate has teamed up with Britain’s posties to help in the hunt for missing children.
The Royal Mail’s 124,000 postmen and women will get alerts on their scanners, used to track and sign for deliveries, when a child or adult disappears.
The group will also use nearly 2,000 TV screens at mail centres to raise the alarm in the tie-up with charity Missing People, which is promoted by Kate.
A recorded message from the former GP will be shown for the first time on Tuesday to Royal Mail staff on their internal telly network.
In it, Kate, whose three-year-old daughter disappeared from a holiday apartment in Portugal in May 2007, tells them: “We hear of people who are willing to help, who see people every day, see changes in routine every day, and I think it is a really exciting prospect in the crucial role they can play.”
Kate, 46, an ambassador for the charity, helped launch an enhanced child rescue alert scheme in spring.
She and heart doctor husband Gerry, 46, from Rothley, Leics, believe Madeleine – who would now be 11 – could still be alive.
Police have quizzed a British gardener, who working near the apartment little Maddie vanished from, about his whereabouts during a critical two-and-a-half hour period on that night.
The ex-pat, who still lives in Portugal's Algarve, was working near the holiday flat which the three-year-old vanished from.

Bit of TM spin there desperate to associate 'kate Mccann' with something positive. Again.
Something to deflect from more important news elsewhere. Again.
Rubbish. Again.

I rather like the 'heart doctor'. Was that for the Mirror readers? How on earth is that going to help? Might as well ask parking wardens - hmm better not give them any ideas. Back to Postman Pat - the spin still heavily slanted towards the thousands that go missing every hour.

How on earth have they got the b##ls to do this stuff? Brilliant, if Maddie was taken from their side, but these people left their children on their own, at night, 5 nights in a row! They should be begging and pleading for Smithman to come forward imo

Or at least that is the story they have sold to the public for over 7 years. Either way they are the most arrogant people on the planet.
I reckon the plan all along was to achieve some sort of fame in the form of ambassador/guru/charity president/guiding light. Blah!
If this had been a real scenario and they had played the guilty but don`t do as we did/ learn from us card it may just have worked for them
All IMO

I wonder how many of the 124,000 post men and women, will watch the video and think f%%k off you tosser? I wonder if the post men and women will have to ring a number if they see anything suspicious, will they get fed up waiting for the phone to be answered? If they hear a young child screaming at a house they deliver to where the occupants are smelly, look odd, etc, etc do they report it as a potential abduction? IMO it sounds like a load of poppycock and it won't work.Is lady Kathrine happy with Kate taking over the reigns of missing children.

What might work is ditching madame as the video will switch people off. Flashing up a picture of a missing person when the pad is activated for the customer signature would be far more effective. If both the postie and the househoulder saw it, might jog memories or even though the odds are phenomenally low be that missing person. Adding a requirement to ask the customer had they seen that person would make it even better although there is no guarentee that they would really ask before clicking the affirmative. It would work for a period though if you could get them to buy into the scheme. Given the relatively small numbers of missing children and albeit probably far more missing adults, the repetition of the images over time would reinforce the images in the postie's mind. This would be far better than a video starring someone they (probably) don't respect and posters that rapidly become like wallpaper.

I don't know about anyone else but I've spent many many happy minutes stood in the doorway with an increasingly frazzled postie desperately trying to get the scanner to work and it seems that the worse the weather is, the more temperamental the scanner gets.
Add a missing person photo into what is already a fraught process and I fear for my poor lovely postie's sanity.

Presumably that would include many posties who have to spend quite a large proportion of their wages on childcare while they are out in all weathers, delivering mail for a pittance, and doing the "searching" on behalf of the McCanns who are tucked up in a nice warm bed at that hour in the morning. If I were a postie I certainly wouldn't be doing it.

I'm sure that most posties and the public in general would be happy to do their bit to help to find people who are genuinely missing.

I agree with you totally, and what if any postie is against this stupid idea because they believe K & G were responsible for Madeleine's "disappearance". Are they going to be sacked or put on indefinite "sick leave" for speaking out and saying that if they believed K & G disposed of Madeleine why should we be put in a position of this person dictating to us what we should do above our normal duties of putting post through peoples' doors????
And why the hell is Kate McCann still being pushed up front for the face of Missing People when the people who went missing in the first place, who Missing People are supposed to represent, most probably went missing because of their horrendous home lives and don't want to go home, not because they were left abandoned to their own devices when they were barely 4 years old.

What is a postman meant to do if they find a missing child? wait with the missing child until police arrive.

Had to laugh at how true this is. I can hear my lovely postie cursing under his breath at having to do this, adding to his already underpaid overworked schedule. And don't mention Christmas is coming to him! I'm sure the majority of posties would love to help but why should they have that responsibility forced onto them.
