The money was raised so that Dr Amaral could appeal the decision of the lower court. Since the McCanns had managed to get his assets frozen, he would not have been able to submit his appeal. Oddly enough, some of us think that justice is for everyone and not just for those who have the money to pay for it. Dr Amaral did not have access to his own funds and since the McCanns have access to a fund of money that was actually donated by members of the public to help them search for their daughter, they didn't need to worry about where the money was coming from for their own legal fees. Without the help of many thousands of people around the world, the judicial process would not have been available to Dr Amaral. Would that have been fair? Yet, there are people who think that justice is only for those with a fund to dip into. I call this article sick and as ignorant as I have ever seen in The Sun.

Just because you put it in the paper, does not make it the truth. In fact it is very far from the truth what you have printed here.  

But through the internet people now see things for what they are, and not what they read in the Sun.

Let me ask you this how the hell have they managed to keep there other kids if this was me or any other average Joe we would not have our kids anymore and doctors that think it is acceptable to leave there children asleep in apartment while they leave the complex to eat and drink up to 8 bottles of wine a night!!!!

Shame on you for reporting in this manner. The so called "trolls" are just normal, everyday people who donated money to enable Snr Amaral to appeal a decision that was made in the courts. Having had all his assets frozen he would have been unable to do this without some financial assistance. Your reference to the fund closing down should have made reference to the fact that he requested that no more money be donated as sufficient funds had been donated. Should you not be reporting the outcome of the appeal in a positive way supporting his legal right to freedom of speech rather than berating him for having a book published giving his opinion based on the facts as he see's them. The other parties in this have also, let's not forget, made plenty of money by publishing a book as well as receiving many donations from the public. How welcome some objective reporting would be on this matter.

Some of us have the intelligence to make an informed judgement based on all the evidence we can gleam. I have no idea what happened to Madeleine. I have no idea whether her parents were involved directly or indirectly in her disappearance. But having viewed all the video interviews the McCanns have given I have come to the conclusion that they are not telling the whole truth. I don't believe that cadaver dogs just picked on the McCanns and made their one and only mistake in this case. Given that Kate and Gerry used publicly donated money to sue Amaral why do you think it was wrong for him to use public donations to defend himself? I think the public are perfectly entitled to donate to whatever cause they wish without being vilified by your rag. the McCann camp are constantly asking for donations and have an online shop. As far as I can ascertain Amaral did not ask for donations. I did not contribute to his fund but reading the utter rubbish you print I now wish I had. If this is taken to another appeal and Amaral needs more funding I will donate next time. The McCanns have not " lost" €500,000 because of this court ruling. They never had the money in the first place .

Eddie and Keela had had hundreds of successful cases before the McCann case and they only alerted on places and things associated with the McCanns. Gerry McCann, the not so brilliant researcher, in his efforts to prove the dogs unreliable, found a sample of one! That was the case of a certain Mr Eugene Zapata, who had been charged with murder and the evidence of the sniffer dogs was called into question. Tough luck, though for Gerry McCann, Zapata confessed and the dogs were right! Dogs don't lie. Mrs. and Mr. McCann are so concerned for their remaining children . A step in the right direction would be to answer any questions . Also a reconstruction of the evening would be useful even today. Then all the inconsistencies could be resolved . The Met could also make a statement in public and present the evidence that neither McCanns nor friends are involved . This proof must indeed exist if the McCanns are cleared of any wrongdoing. They are innocent. So nothing to fear! That would shut up all the critics. It is the best they could do for their children. Otherwise what a horrible life it must be. The McCanns are nearly 50 years old and a large piece of life has passed . To spend valuable lifetime by sueing and threatening people till deathbed can not be the meaning of life. I can not understand that they are not doing these things. Answering questions, a reconstruction, a detector test. Of course they have not to prove their innocence. It is up to the Police to prove their guilt. But for the sake of their children they should do that.

I'm sure there are thousands upon thousands of people who would like an answer as to why Kate McCann did NOT answer the 48 questions, WHY KATE ? WHY? WE WOULD ALL LIKE TO KNOW.

Extremely clever and shrewd move on the Sun's part. They had to know if they printed this article it would result in many many comments taking issue with it. And in so doing, the comments have provided the reading public with even more information... case in point: sick trolls paid for Amaral's defense...point raised in comments: members of the British police forces also contributed. case in point: sick trolls paid for Amaral's defense... point raised in comments: only because the McCanns froze all of his assets and he was unable to pay for his appeal otherwise.

And it goes on.
By printing a story that appears on the surface to be anti-Amaral, the Sun has in fact opened up the public's eyes to more and more details, thanks to the comments the story has drawn.

I think you are correct. Note not a single comment in favour of the McCanns. There is no way Pam and her cohorts wouldn't be all over this. My guess is they are filtering and positive comments out. This way they get to say what they truly feel and get the truth out there without being Carter Rucked. They knew it would push the right buttons.

The final showdown in Strasbourg would come as a hefty financial blow to the loser but it would finally draw a line under the legal wrangle, now in its seventh year.

Speaking from her office in Lisbon, Mr and Mrs McCann’s lawyer Isabel Duarte said the case had become “political and toxic”.

The couple sued Mr Amaral over claims he made in his book, The Truth Of The Lie. He was forced to take early retirement while investigating Madeleine’s disappearance in Praia da Luz on the Algarve nine years ago.

Last week he won a significant victory in his efforts to restore his reputation when Portugal’s Appeal Court found in his favour.

The decision overturned a lower court’s ruling ordering him to pay the McCanns almost £400,000 for alleged libel over claims he made in his book, that Madeleine had died in apartment 5a of the Ocean Club in May 2007.

He has insisted the theory came from information in the original police files. He also claimed he had the right to express his opinion on the case after being removed from the investigation in October 2007.

Ms Duarte has been instructed by the McCanns to fight the appeal court’s judgment at the Supreme Court in Lisbon.

If Madeleine’s parents lose this challenge they face a double legal whammy as Mr Amaral has signalled his intention to sue them for damages to his reputation, potentially putting at risk some of the £746,152 in the McCann’s Maddie Fund.

If it goes to the European Court of Human Rights, the legal bills could be astronomical. The court encourages parties to reach a “friendly settlement” but a lengthy and costly hearing seems likely.

A source close to Mr Amaral said: “He’s prepared to take whatever steps are necessary to protect his freedom of speech and his reputation.”

Meanwhile, copies of his book are expected to go back on sale in Portugal this week. The McCanns said in a statement last week that they were “disappointed” by the ruling from the Appellate Court.

The statement added: “We will continue to defend ourselves against this libel and the search for our daughter.

“We will be appealing to the Portuguese Supreme Court.”

If those who don't buy the McCanns BS story are sick trolls, what does that make a murderous couple living off their dead daughters name ?  I really can't understand why the Sun supports the McCanns when they are clearly the guilty party in this tragic affair. Like others, I am really baffled that there are not a few comments like 'they made a terrible mistake and they'll live with it for the rest of their lives/none of us are perfect and they were checking every 10 min/etc. The point of moderating comments is to avoid the paper being sued so comments like the ones I cite, would not be moderated normally.

However, some of the comments allowed are very strong (I love them!) but its blowing my mind that they are being let through as they are - the paper must be confident of not being sued....why?

Yes, very strong, I have actually removed one as it is libel imo.  You cannot accuse people like that, and imo some of the comments are being put in not by actual antis but others intent to cause problems and make us look like evil trolls.

I wish the comments could be published in the paper so whoever reads it will know exactly what most people think now!
