British police searching for Madeleine McCann have ruled out the possibility that an English speaking teenager sleeping rough in Rome is the missing girl.

Internet campaigners believe she could be Madeleine, who vanished nearly 10 years ago, and a group supported by her parents has alerted Scotland Yard.

Photos of the mystery girl that appeared online bear a resemblance to how Madeleine may look now, if she was still alive.

The youngster is pictured downcast with long fair hair partly plaited and carrying two shopping bags.

The teenager, who is said to speak English, has no ID or passport and has been sleeping on the streets.

But the official Madeleine Facebook campaign endorsed by Kate and Gerry McCann posted: “Thank you all for contacting us regarding this child. We have passed on to Operation Grange. They do not believe this is Madeleine.”


Madeleine ’s parents from Rothley, Leics, have appealed to people across the world to “keep vigilant” as they continuing hunting for their daughter.

Some online observers thought the English girl in Rome bore a startling resemblance to how Madeleine might look
A Yard spokesperson confirmed they had been informed about the girl in Italy but said: “We have no comment on individual strands on this investigation. We cannot make a running commentary.”

A source close to ex-GP Kate and heart doctor Gerry, both 48, said: “If there are any developments of any significance police advise them. They remain grateful that the public still have Madeleine in their minds. They are convinced this girl is not their daughter.”

Madeleine disappeared from a holiday apartment in May 2007 when she was three years old.

The campaign’s website has a photo of Madeleine that has been digitally altered to show how she might appear today.

It simply says: “Have you seen me?”


The comparison between Madeleine and the mystery girl was first made by the campaign group which posted this message: “Some people asked for help for this girl who for several weeks has been wandering in the centre of Rome in obvious difficulty.

“She does not seem accustomed to living on the streets and to those who approached to ask her if she needs something but she only responds in English. She could come from Great Britain.”

One Madeleine campaigner urged: “This looks like Madeleine. Please check.”

Another supporter Pamela Gurney wrote: “I feel so certain that she is alive and will continue to believe it until we are told otherwise.”

Madeleine ’s parents had a photo of their daughter blessed by the Pope in the Italian capital in June 2007, just a month after she disappeared.

At the time and speaking after being touched by Pope Benedict XVI in St Peter’s Square Kate said: “We know there could be a breakthrough at any time. We must believe and do believe that we can get Madeleine back with us.”

Since May 2011 the Met police has been logging all reported sightings of Madeleine under their inquiry Operation Grange, which has recently won extra Government funding to continue their search for at least another four months.

A spokesman for Rome’s military police the Carabinieri said: ‘We brought the woman in last week after a member of the public said that she was in trouble and that we had to come and help.

“She told us her name is Maria and that she is English and said she was 20. But the date of birth she gave us would make her 21.

“We let her go because she hasn’t done anything wrong."

He added: "There has been speculation that she is Madeleine McCann, the British girl who went missing in Portugal in 2007.

“But Madeleine would be 13 now and this woman is much older. It’s not her.’

"‘When we asked her why she was here she simply said she left her family in England, without giving a precise reason."

It could well be, but since about quarter past 8 last night the Mail have updated, tweaked and changed their original story at least half a dozen times. Probably closer to 10 times in total. Rather than just having a new article with new news on.

Ive thought for a while that some of these articles are just for us "forkers" ,as they do call us. Some of them see print .....but most just sit on line!

I've not physically picked up a paper and read one for a while now. So no idea if this latest round of nonsense has seen the light of day in paper format...?

Has confirmation made it in that the travelling homeless woman who looked nothing like MM and had a big age gap to MM is not actually MM after all.

Intrigued to know if it made the print. Or as Bampots stated earlier, they just come up with all this ridiculous guff online only?

And also humiliate a young lady who obviously has issues which demand some compassion and certainly having her life splashed over a news paper which insinuates she is someone else to get their readership numbers up.......slimebags!

A very good point though. Poor woman as you say had some issues and obviously wanted to fade into anonymity and lead a quiet and simple life. Anything but now and she'll be forever linked to Madeleine McCann. A traumatic episode like this with all the exposure could literally send her 'over the edge'.

And speaking of Slimebags - I was actually surprised Martin Brunt didn't hotfoot it over there to stalk and harass her. Go undercover for a 'scoop'. If he sticks his overcoat on and doesn't shave for a couple of days then he looks homeless anyway and would've blended in well.

Brunt is a more refined slimebag...... of the poseur slimebag variety.......the kind who would sell his granny for a story!
