Re: Miscellaneous Criminal Cases
Some of the killers in U K prisons who will never be freed. Dennis Nilsen has of course recently died.

This case has been mentioned on the abuse in football topic and I'm posting a different link here. I've never heard of it before.

Re: Miscellaneous Criminal Cases
It's the 50th anniversary of the fatal shooting of Senator Robert Kennedy while he was campaigning in the run-up to the presidential election.
I know it didn't have the same impact as did his brother's murder - everyone who was old enough remembers where they were when they heard the news - but does anyone remember about Robert?
It was half term and I'd been revising for my exams the following week. It was very hard to concentrate thereafter.

What a bizarre story - the rabid man-hating feminists whom my son tells me about will certainly approve of this one.
Just as a matter of interest, how is this budding heart surgeon still studying at Oxford University while she is living in Milan?

Give me strength! Why appeal the very lenient suspended sentence, for goodness sake.

Re: Miscellaneous Criminal Cases
There is a two part programme about this case on BBC2 at 21.00 next Tuesday and Wednesday. I've never heard of it before but it sounds interesting.

Re: Miscellaneous Criminal Cases
Another interesting case that I'd never heard of before.
Note the bit where it was said that the police could tell when the suspect was lying because of his body language - that reminded me of someone else!

It sounds like a very dysfunctional family - so the son (who said originally that he wanted nothing to do with the case) hadn't noticed that his father had gone missing and neither had other relatives.

I wouldn't have thought that anyone could be charged with failing to provide their Facebook password to the police. Don't the police have the authority anyway to let a computer expert get into the account?

They would have to arrest me then as I have not got a clue what mine is

Somehow I think that the vast majority of us who aren't the main suspect in a much more serious offence are quite safe!

Another case that Gemma O'Doherty is investigating. I haven't read all the details yet but it certainly sounds bizarre.

Re: Miscellaneous Criminal Cases
An interesting case about possible protection of a senior policeman in a brutal murder. Raises parallels with the apparent protection of the McCanns.
However, I wish Gemma would focus on the McCann case. She did well to get Martin Smith to talk to her, albeit briefly. Would love to see her interview the McCanns separately....

Pat Brown's thoughts on the case.
"Two things: the level of psychopathy this family mass murderer exhibits could not have been totally undetectable for all the years of his life. People around him must have minimized the heck out of certain behaviors. Secondly, this ridiculous new story sounds like something a defense attorney conjures up when he has a losing case. I have always thought that defense attorneys should be charged with the crime of accessory after the fact if they knowingly make up phony stories to confuse the jury as opposed to defending their client with the facts. Jose Baez would be behind bars for years for his unethical behavior. I know how this works because I was once hired by the defense to analyze a case of a woman who was brutally murdered and her husband had been convicted. I analyzed the evidence and told them straight up that he had been rightly convicted. Then, they asked me to help them create alternative scenarios with which to secure an appeal. I told them I was done".

I'm still mystified as to why Facebook isn't legally obliged to give information to the police in a case like this.

His old school in Wanganui is where Prince Edward spent his gap year as a tutor.

I remember this case well and had been thinking of it again recently. Yes, in his case a "life" sentence was a joke and, from the recent case that you've posted a link to, he hasn't improved with age.

Re: Miscellaneous Criminal Cases
The recently mentioned Simon Armitage claims that he wrote the play Eclipse in response to a missing girl in the town of Hebden Bridge. I'm guessing this is the girl in question.

Can't say that I remember it, or that it generated a lot of interest nationally. Without wishing to understate the suffering of those involved, it seems like a fairly "mundane" story to inspire somebody to produce a work about it.

I remember hearing about it - her father was a suspect because of the very carefree way in which he behaved at the time.
