The documentary airs on Wednesday May 3 at 9pm, exactly 10 years after Maddie vanished.

The programme sees reporter Richard Bilton visit the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz, where Maddie went missing.

Bilson has covered the story for the BBC since the first days of Maddie’s disappearance.

When did Madeleine McCann go missing?

Madeleine, three, vanished on May 3, 2007, when her family, from Leicestershire, were holidaying in the Algarve, Portugal.

Parents Gerry and Kate left their three children – including toddler twins Sean and Amelie – sleeping in their apartment while they dined at a nearby tapas bar.

When Kate returned to check on the kids at around 10pm that evening, she discovered that Maddie was not in her bed and was missing.

What are the latest developments in the case?

Detectives working on the case are still pursuing “critical” leads as the 10th anniversary of her disappearance approaches, a Scotland Yard chief has said.
Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said there are “significant investigative avenues” that are of “great interest” to both the UK and Portuguese teams.

Veteran investigative journalist Danny Collins believes the toddler could not have been snatched from the room.

He is convinced she left the apartment in Praia da Luz looking for her parents before being abducted and possibly sold to gypsies.

Former Scotland Yard detective Colin Sutton says the most “most likely and credible scenario” for Maddie’s disappearance is a targeted kidnap – possibly to replace some grieving parents’ own dead child.

A Portuguese probe into Madeleine McCann’s disappearance was archived in July 2008 before being reopened in May 2014 after convicted burglar Euclides Monteiro, a former employee at the Ocean club holiday resort where the youngster vanished from, was identified as a suspect.

His widow Luisa Rodrigues has always insisted the Cape Verdian immigrant, who died in a tractor accident in 2009, is an innocent man but he has never been officially ruled out of the inquiry.

I must admit that I'm not optimistic - it has to be better than the Australian programme but that's not saying much.

In the absence of definitive results from the police, reporters will have to be very careful what they say.

I would settle for an honest and accurate account of events, but I doubt that is part of the script.

If they keep doing these programmes, then that is all we expect as you say froggy, an honest and accurate account.  No one will complain at that I am sure.  It is the media pushing all the rubbish and prompting all the speculation and conspiracy theories.  Just for once it would be good to see accurate honest reporting.

I can think of a couple of people who would.

No one is allowed to doubt their version.

Knowing now that the programme features a new interview with the McCanns, I won't be watching when it's first broadcast, maybe later when I can hurry past.

Surely there is no place in a programme which claims to be impartial for a sycophantic interview with the obvious suspects, making no mention of the fact that their version of events is a pile of you know what!

I wondered why her face was so shiney, but couldn`t see evidence of botox - in fact the reverse - very lined. Yet GM hasn`t aged a bit.

First bloomer by Bilton, the Find Madeleine charity is what I thought I heard.

I did and noticed that. Thought it was quite fair and certainly not all favourable to the McCanns.

I heard that too...and the bit where he interviewed the  poor unsuspecting former employee was excruciating but I thought there were some good points and Clarence Mitchell was so pompous he did the McCanns no favours at all. A mixed bag.

So Bilton has solved it.
A thief broke open the shutter and stole her.
He even may have identified the snatcher as being the guy with the boat.
Now this is the foremost investigative journalist that the BBC has to offer.
God help us all.

Any programme with Gamble and Mitchell is going to be a farce.
Like the way Gamble had a go at T May (as he would) - hopefully might make T May more keen to get the truth out...

I wouldn't go so far as saying it was fair. He did go through the dogs (only took 10 years..) and showed a GA interview because they were now "allowed"!? Then went on to trash them and the DNA evidence but didn't point out the failings/shutting down of FSS. He didn't do the same for OG's burglar theory. All he said right at the end was that the 3 "suspects" were finally released from the status after 3 years.

There were other annoyances but can't be bothered to waste my time anymore. The current PJ top man definitely wasn't giving anything away and wouldn't be drawn at all.

I don't know if it was intentional but the PJ came across as far more intelligent than OG. It just looked farcical with reports of SY detectives turning up and questioning a man who appeared to have a learning disability, because they thought he resembled an E-fit - which he didn't. CM was so pompous and supercilious it is according to him unbelievable that doctors could be involved in the disappearance of their daughter. Simple, poor foreign people why yes  but heaven forbid British doctors! What a nasty, deluded snob!

Yes there were a lot of annoyances and it was biased pro McCann but with Gamble and Mitchell as key contributors that was expected. Clearly showed Bbc bias but unless you have taken a keen interest in this case that would go over your head... Most viewers would have taken it at face value. My 13 yr old son watched it and his only comment was the parents don't seem very caring people towRds Maddie only for themselves.
