Re: Miscellaneous Criminal Cases
That's a difficult situation isn't it.
You could compare it to a case of a child abducted as a baby who doesn't want to return to the natural parents he or she has never known.
If it is true that the father was violent and aggressive, then he deserves no sympathy but then again, there have been cases of women inventing stories like that.

Decomposing body found wrapped in a blanket under a pile of rocks in Las Vegas may be missing boy, 13, who was last seen four months ago
Family members did not report that Aaron Jones, 13, had gone missing until April 14 - four months after he was last seen on December 31, 2016, police said
Two cousins searching for Aaron found a nearly skeletal body on Tuesday
The remains were wrapped in a tarp and blanket and placed under several rocks
The decay made it impossible for police to determine the gender or approximate age, but Aaron's family members are confident it belongs to the teenage boy
His father Paul was arrested on April 1 in an unrelated child abuse case
He may be named as a suspect if the body is identified as Aaron, police said

Re: Miscellaneous Criminal Cases
Does anyone remember the case of Emanuel Maillart in 1967? Chatelaine, I don't know if you were living in France at the time.
I can't find anything other than this photo.
http://www.imspix.com/RM?id=521223
He was 7 I think and was kidnapped and murdered by a teenage boy. It was well-publicised in the U K too but I don't recall what the motive was or what happened to the killer.

Re: Miscellaneous Criminal Cases
If you translate the below then you get a bit more info about it:
http://criminocorpus.hypotheses.org/11281
(some paragraphs translated and snipped)
In December 1967, a fifteen-year-old boy was transferred from the Versailles Prison to the young prisoners' quarters of the Prison de la Santé in Paris. He stayed there for two and a half years, until his trial before the Juvenile Court of Versailles on June 26, 1970. The judges sentenced him to fifteen years' imprisonment. He had kidnapped a seven-year-old child, Emmanuel Malliart, had murdered him and had asked his parents for a ransom. This affair had moved a great part of the public, who for a week had shared the anxieties of his parents.
On December 4, 1967, the youngest son of the Maillart family, did not come to lunch with his parents. He was educated at the college of Saint-Jean-de-Bethune in Versailles. The father of the child, warned by his wife, returned to the family home and found in his mailbox a request for ransom. The text was made with letters cut from magazines. The kidnapper demanded 20,000 francs in denominations of 100 francs and fixed a period of five days for the delivery of the sum at the foot of a statue of the city.
In front of the police officers after his arrest, Francois M. specified that he had killed the child on the very day of the abduction. François M., a pupil of a general school, had come to look for Emmanuel at the exit of the Saint-Jean-de-Bethune school at 11.45. He knew him because the child came to play with his little sister. Pretending a game, he had decided the child to settle in a crate placed on a stroller that he was dragging with him shouting "scrap iron, old rags, scrap ...". He went to his house and invited the boy to go down to the cellar. There he killed him with a stick. Witnesses, students of the school reported a boy looking like a gypsy. Shortly afterwards he buried the body in the forest of False-restes. He kept the child's shoes and shoulder straps,

Gosh, no, Freedom. I was in my early 20's, living in a [one] rented room in Amsterdam [don't make me talk about that one], had no radio, certainly no t.v. and no money for [foreign] newspapers ;-)
But I will look that up.
Perhaps with my by now 30+ years of experience in France and mastering the language I might be able to unearth something ...

Re: Miscellaneous Criminal Cases
Oh, gosh, Freedom: whilst searching I tumbled [French papers] upon yet another, more recent case, in which a French young boy was driven to his death for wetting himself in his bed .... I despair. Could we please get rid of such parents and adopt a child ... :-(

Re: Miscellaneous Criminal Cases
I was still at school when the Maillart case happened but the memories of it have stayed with me over the years. Like you, Chatelaine, my life was to be very stormy in my early 20s but somehow I survived!
There are so many stories of long-term abuse of children - sometimes so dreadful that I can't bear to read all the details.

I remember this case being mentioned before with doubts raised about the victim's story.
Can anyone recall more about it?

I can understand why people might raise doubts. I've got no clue of knowing either way so won't heap any more cynicism upon her, but I will just point out that this story ran in one of Dennis O'Brien's papers at the same time as he was putting his Algarve property on the market, which doesn't seem like joined up thinking to me.

Re: Miscellaneous Criminal Cases
I was just reading about this one in the DM. So thought I'd stick it up:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4505192/Did-Texas-millionaire-83-away-double-murder.html
Did Texas multimillionaire, 83, get away with the double murder of his ex-wife's daughter and boyfriend 40 years ago?
Cullen Davis was acquitted of the 1976 murders of Andrea Willborn and Stan Farr
He was in the midst of divorcing 12-year-old Andrea's mother, Priscilla Davis
Farr, a former Texas Christian University basketball player, was her boyfriend
Both were shot by an unknown gunman dressed in black at Priscilla's mansion
It had been the home she shared with Cullen, an oil heir, before they separated
Priscilla survived and identified him as the killer but he was never convicted
Now 83, he has appeared on CBS's 48 Hours to protest his innocence 40 years later

Re: Miscellaneous Criminal Cases
I thought this was an interesting story, an aspiring heart surgeon is not given a jail sentence for her attack on her boyfriend, because the judge considered her to be too talented - and possibly too posh!
Aspiring heart surgeon Lavinia Woodward (pictured), 24, swiped at her boyfriend with a bread knife, before stabbing him in the leg. She then hurled a laptop, a glass and a jam jar at him, during the clash at Christ Church college, Oxford. Judge Ian Pringle said the offence would normally mean a prison term. But he then delayed sentencing for a period of four months and hinted drug addict Woodward won't be jailed - because of her 'extraordinary' talent.
