Is the story online yet or can anyone read the small print on that front page?

Just logging out and saw this what's all that about then.

Strange innit on the one hand we have the MET closing in,on the other we have the McCanns ready to spend 500 grand to keep the search going .

The Portuguese investigation continues, who knows what pesky nuggets they have up their sleeves? Therefore, OG must "continue" too.

Edit: Having read the BBC piece, are they hinting that the international hunt for the man the Express are talking about is Smithman? Getting interesting?

If it is Smithman, Kate and Gerry won't be pleased - considering how much time and effort has been spent trying to discredit the Smith family, who are, after all, the source of the Smithman sighting. They tried to hide the e-fits. The e-fits show a remarkable likeness to Gerry. Gerry carried Sean off the plane in the same way that the Smiths described the person they saw carrying the little girl (the coincidence is what jogged th Smiths' memories). Smithman has never come forward to identify himself, in spite of masses of publicity.

One might suggest that, having eliminated absolutely every other possibility, OG has come down to this final solid lead after keeping it on the back burner throughout the investigation. I don't believe it was forgotten about at all, nor do I believe it's a last throw of the dice. I believe the dice were always there, waiting in the wings.

And we can't forget that the Smiths have been available, as witnesses, from the start, and we have no idea whether the police have interviewed them again, indepth.

It will be interesting to find out (if we find out) whether it is Smithman. I personally hope that it is, and that OG has much more information than they're releasing publicly. If anything is likely to make Kate and Gerry nervous it will be Smithman. Publicly, they should embrace the sighting enthusiastically, because it backs up their argument that Madeleine was abducted and should, if it was anyone but Gerry or another Tapas member, provide a concrete lead. Privately, they could be sh*tting bricks.

They can't need 6 months to "close in on one man" - that doesn't make sense
I assume they're just looking for a body, then everything else will fall into place

Whose body? Mystery man, or Madeleine's?

Hmmm,intersting the Express the first to run with the story,could it be smithman? keep thinking out side the box folks,remember when the Express got some money back elsewhere.

If International mystery man is Smithman, why are they only just looking for him now ? It's not as if they haven't known about him for years. Why not do the search when they had some manpower available, rather than a couple of detectives on zero hour contracts?

How do we know they haven't been investigating Smithman all along? It's only the papers who are telling us they're looking for him now. OG hasn't been releasing any details at all about the investigation, other than to say, quite some time ago, that they had one line of investigation left that everyone had agreed was worth pursuing. I suspect it was this.

I am incredulous at the amount of money involved in this case - taxpayer's cash being handed to the British police, (who have no jurisdiction) and the fraudulent Fund.

I can see where OG have got to where there are,one last throw of the dice was the cry in December last year,the dice was thrown and what ever number it landed on is where they are at,1(smithman) 2,(rastaman)3(pimpleman) etc you get the picture.

The papers are just making things up as they go along. We know OG aren't saying anything. The PJ even less (and it's those who count).

The Express' 'The Met are closing in on one man'.... Is just mockingly pointing the fingers at Smithman/Gerry (which they've been dying to do since they had to cough up hundreds of thou).

IMO.

Costs are going down though,£95,000 last April for six months,met by a similar amount come the Autumn,its now down to £85,000 for six months!

About 14k a month then.

PJ not quite ready yet to issue the EAW's so OG just following suit and keeping their side open until they are.

The 14k a month will cover that.
